Families often have a single entry in a particular column with a bracket connecting family
members together. This may give the appearance, for example, as if a wife and each individual
child are traveling to join a husband when, in fact, the children are joining their father.
LITUANIA NEWS
According to newspaper accounts of the time, in early February, 1921 several typhus cases were
found aboard immigrant passenger ships arriving New York from Europe. The authorities quickly
moved to decontaminate and isolate passengers until the twelve day incubation period for the
disease had passed, causing great pressure on the Ellis Island health facilities. Many, many
ships were suspect. To ease the stress it was decided to divert a number of ships to other ports,
more than a dozen to Boston. Among these was the SS Lituania of the Baltic America Line that
came in to Boston Harbor on February 27. The initial decision was to detain and quarantine the
arrivals only if examinations disclosed some infectious disease. Apparently that was the case.
Only U.S. citizens, were allowed to land on February 27. All others were sent to the quarantine
hospital at Gallups Island in the harbor. They were finally brought to the Cunard Pier in East
Boston on March 11 for their long awaited immigratation inspection. The Lituania had already
departed for New York and was on its way back to Europe by March 5th.
