AFFIDAVIT OF SURGEON
_________________
I, S. Kano, Surgeon of the M.S. HIE MARU, sailing therewith, do solemnly sincerely and truly swear that I have had 8 years experience as a Physician and Surgeon, and that I am entitled to practice as such by and under the authority of Japanese Government, and that I have made a personal examination of each of the aliens named herein, and that the foregoing Lists or Manifest Sheets, ___ in number, according to the best of my knowledge and belief, are full and correct, and true in all particulars, relative to the mental and physical condition of such aliens.
S. Kanoh
Surgeon
Sworn to me this 18th day of May, 1941 at Seattle.
In 1941 the M.S. Hie Maru was a passenger and cargo ship of the Orient-Vancouver-Seattle Line. During WWII it was requisitioned by the Imperial Japanese Navy and converted into a submarine depot ship. The Hie Maru was torpedoed and sunk in the Pacific, near the Truk Naval base in November, 1943. In January 1938 a plot to sink the Hie Maru in Seattle harbor failed when the perpetrator drowned. He wanted to protest against Japan’s invasion of China by sinking Japanese ships carrying scrap metal and other war materials back to Japan. 109-112 The Manski family, along with many other Jewish refugee passengers on this voyage,
were rescued from almost certain death at the hands of the Nazis by the kindness
of Chuine Sugihara, Japan's Consul General in Lithuania in the summer of 1940. For

The personal memoir of Samuil Manski, passenger 110, is told in "With God's Help"
Manski's photograph accompanies information on an annual memorial concert honoring
