Johannes Hopfner MANNHARDT 
Johannes Hopfner (o Umlaut) Mannhardt was born on April 26th, 1880 in Flensburg, Germany 
as 4th child of Carl Waldemar Nicolaus Mannhardt and Maria Dorothea Isabella
Gillmayr. As a young man, Johannes Mannhardt joined the army. He went to what was 
at the time German South West Africa with his regiment. After being wounded, he was sent 
back to Germany to recuperate. This is the trip back to his regiment. After WWI, 
when Germany lost their colonies, he went back to Germany. In 1921 he went to Angola with 
his sister Charlotte Amalie and her husband Emil Gynz von Rekowski. In 1925 Johannes Mannhardt 
married Ruth Elisabeth Wernekke. She was born August 4th, 1901 in Dresden, 
Germany. They had 4 sons, all born in Angola. The transcriber's father is the oldest son, 
then they had Hans Henner (1928 - 1997), Jurgen (with u Umlaut) (1929 - 1978) and Klaus
(1936 - 1997).  

Johannes Mannhardt died on his coffee plantation Rio Bungo in Angola on March 4th, 1973. 
Ruth Elisabeth Mannhardt died in Hanerau/Hademarschen, Germany on June 7th, 1982. 
Johannes Mannhardt and Ruth Elisabeth Mannhardt are the transcriber's grandparents.
