Transcriber's note: Emil von Rekowski was born Emil Otto Fedor Gynz von Rekowski (or von Gynz Rekowski) on January 2nd, 1878 in Breslau, Germany. His father was Otto Fedor von Gynz Rekowski (1850 - 1915), his mother was Alwine Baus. Emil Gynz von Rekowski had brothers, Fedor Emil Karl von Gynz Rekowski (born 1876), Franz Otto Joseph Fedor von Gynz Rekowski (born 1879) and a sister, Olga Mathilde Alvine Gynz von Rekowski (born 1880). Emil's father was in the military, probably commander of Breslau. Emil went to the military as well but wanted to see more of the world and left the military. He went to the US and worked as a cowboy. He also went to South America to work as a gaucho. In 1900/1901 he went to South Africa to fight on the side of the Boers in the Boer War, amongst other places he fought at Spioonskoop. From South Africa he went to German East Africa to run the coffee plantation of the German crown prince. During this time he went back to Germany, went to Flensburg where his father had been transferred. He met Charlotte Amalie Mannhardt and they got married on May 12th, 1906. They went back to German East Africa and eventually started their own coffee plantation near Mwanza on Lake Victoria. During WW I, Emil was in the regiment of Lettow-Vorbeck, commander of the German troops in German East Africa. His wife stayed on the coffee plantation until the German wives where sent to live in internment camps in Mombassa or India since they had been supplying the German troops with food. Towards the end of the war, Emil was captured and spent time in a Prisoner of War camp in Belgian Congo (Ruanda). Eventually both Emil and his wife went to Germany again. Both decided to leave Germany and together with Amalie's brother, Johannes Hopfner (with o Umlaut) Mannhardt went to settle in Angola in 1921. Emil and his wife adopted a boy, Rudi, born March 22, 1914 in Munich, died on their coffee plantation on May 8th, 1934 due to a hunting accident. Emil died on his coffee plantation in 1940, Amalie in Germany on January 31st, 1951. Johannes Mannhardt was the transcriber's grandfather. Her father inherited his aunt's coffee plantation after managing it for his aunt for several years.
