Transcriber's Notes:
The original lister numbered the passengers, but made a mistake in numbering
at #378. The transcriber continued the numbering sequentially, so the numbers
are off from the original document by two. Thus at the end of the document, he
indicated 530 passengers, but there were actually 532.
The lister also abbreviated the occupations, but was inconsistent in these
abbreviations. He used Ser^t, Srvt, Sev^t as abbreviations for Servant and Lab^r,
Lab as abbreviations for Laborer. The transcriber has chosen to record these
occupations in full.
An asterisk (*) is used to refer to an item in the transcriber's notes, which
further explains the entry.
A question mark (?) is used for letter/letters that cannot be read because of the
quality of the document. Where possible a suggestion is given in the Transcriber's
Notes of what the letter/letters may be.
A circumflex (^) is used to indicate missing letters in a name or word. The original
lister showed this by writing the final letter smaller and raising it above the line.
There were 63 deaths on board, but no where does the original lister give us a cause
of the deaths. It was most likely Cholera. See the New York Times Archived article
from November 1853.
282-285 Sagget, Sugget.
295 There is a checkmark after this passenger's name which may indicate that she was
ill during the passage.
304 Mayer, Manger.
308 There is an asterisk in front of this name. It is not known what this signifies.
Also, no age is listed for this young passenger.
310 and 311 Nagle, Nayle.
320-322 Devling, Dowling.
324-326 Redder, Redden.
337 Hogan, Rogan.
338 There is a checkmark next to the age of this passenger. Possibly he was ill on
the voyage.
358 No age is given for this passenger. The words "Died on the voyage" appear to be
crossed out.
363 This passenger's name has been crossed out. Probably she did not make the
voyage.
364 Mealy, Meahy.
373 Donnell or Donnelly.
374 Charken, Clarken.
376 Murie, Muroe. Could the name actually be Munroe and the parent of Passengers #388
and #389?
382 There is a checkmark after this passenger's name, which may indicate that he
was ill during the voyage.
400 Dowling, Devling.
405 The child has a feminine name, but is listed as a male.
423 Is she really a child, or the age of 30 correct?
424 Hubner, Huhner.
438-441 Surname possibilities: Neiderhoefer, Neiderhofer, Neiderhaefer. Although the
final "r" isn't seen, it is logical that it is there. #439-Could this passenger
possibility be a female with the name Kunigunde? The lister made the "K" and "R"
very much the same.
443 Golzbarzky, Gotzbarzky.
446-449 These are all listed as "child". It is probably that they are the offspring
of #444 and 445.
451 Possibly Payern.
466 There is a checkmark next to this name. She may have been ill on the voyage.
468 Occupation was that of schoolmaster.
471 This name has at least one "t" in it, or possibly as many as three. The cross of the
"t" goes across the fourth letter, as well as the sixth & seventh letter. This is
typical of this lister. The name may be Hablett, Halkett, Habtell, Habtett, Habtelt,
etc., there is no way of knowing.
472-480 and 483 These people are most likely related. #480 is first name after the
fold of the document, and thus has been re-written and the spelling is different
from his parents above. #483's surname also differs. #476 has a name that is
the feminine form, but is listed as a male. Freiderik or Frierike?
481 The first letter is probably "G". The name is on a vertical crease in the document
but may be Gest, Gess, Gez.
487 Wilhelm is listed as a female, but has a masculine name. Could it be Wilhelmina?
496-501 Racke, Rucke.
508 Full name is Christiana Margt Wilstadt.
522 Gobeg, Gobez.
524 and 525 Beigl, Bieze.
