Transcriber’s Notes:
The use of an * indicates an omission or error by the original recorder or is used to
call your attention to additional information in the Transcriber’s notes below.
The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due to the quality
of the original document.
There are a number of blank spaces in the opening sworn statement. In the first
instance, E. Mitchell, the Master, actually signs the statement as if he was the
mayor since the mayor’s name is omitted.
1-27 All passengers were designated farmers through the use of a descending wavy line
through occupation. This was probably done for convenience rather than accuracy since
children from 11 months old were included.
Under gender, all M’s for male were capitalized; all f’s for female were not, perhaps
reflecting a cultural bias of the period.
Under Country Claiming Allegiance, the composer wrote N^lle Orleans which appears to
be the city of arrival rather than a country.
3 The last legal residence appears to be spelled Croisy. However, Michelin’s
France: Tourist and Motoring Atlas that lists all of the more than 36,000
communes in the country has a listing only for Choisy.
6-7 There is an acute accent over the final e in the last name of Georges and Marie.
7 Marie Gosse’s gender was represented “fem.” A single letter was used for all
other passengers. Her middle initial could be E or L.
8 The last legal residence is illegible although it appears to be Zeshinez. While
the name appears to start with a “z,” a review of the names in Michelin’s France:
Tourist and Motoring Atlas reveals no similar name under z, s or y.
9 The last four letters of the first name were bunched together but they appear to
be “cois” for the complete name Francois.
16-22 The last legal residence of these individuals was left blank. There is a dash
in place of a town name, but its meaning is unknown.
23 The last legal residence is illegible. It appears to be Evagucs, but there is no
town name in France reasonably close to that spelling.
