I, Henry R Hovey, Master of the Devonshire do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers received on Board the Devonshire whereof I am Master, from London. The original lister numbered the passengers; however, he began again with #1 for the
steerage passengers. The transcriber has continued the numbering consecutively. The
original lister provided a recapitulation at the end of the document; however, it is
not accurate. He accounts for 385 passengers, when there are actually 387.
A question mark (?) is used for letter/letters that cannot be read because of the
quality of the document. Where possible a suggestion is given in the Transcriber's
Notes of what this letter/letters may be.
An asterisk (*) is used to refer to an item in the transcriber's notes, which
further explains the entry.
A circumflex (^) is used to indicate missing letters in a name. The original lister
showed this by writing the final letter smaller and raising it above the line.
The lister also used the "leading s", which appears at first glance to be an "f"
before the letter "s" when actually it signifies a double "s". The transcriber
has changed this where found.
Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild gratefully acknowledges the aid of Janet Kozlay
(kozlay@comcast.net). She provided information on the group of Hungarian officers
(Passengers 31-77) As she said: These men, mostly officers, fought in Hungary’s 1848-49
War of Liberation against Austria. They were stationed at Komárom, the last fortress to
capitulate to the Austrians in the fall of 1849. Because Austria treated Hungary with
great cruelty and officers were in grave danger of execution or prolonged imprisonment,
a significant number of them fled the country, resulting in the first wave of
Hungarian immigration. Those who fled are often labeled the Kossuth Emigration.
29-30 Passenger 29 has no age listed and one wonders if this is not the

Full name for #387 is Anna Barbara. Full name of #377 is Johanna Barbara. Full
name of #378 is John G? Adam. Full name of #379 is Roscarl Wilhelmina and the
full name of #380 is Albertine.

Susan Spelletich Hellum is a descentant of Michael Spelletich. The family settled in
Scott County, Iowa where Bodog (Felix was his anglicized name) acquired land which he
farmed and rented to tenants. The family later moved to Davenport, Iowa.
Stephen died shortly after the Civil War, and his parents eventually returned to Hungary
where they died in the late 1800's. Michael married, had a family and spent the rest of
his life managing the farm property and sending annual proceeds to Hungary for his father and
