Transcriber's Notes:

* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.

Question marks replace illegible information or letters.

The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.

The above statment regarding the names of the ship and captain, the port of origin, date of
arrival and sworn statements by the Deputy commissioner and Captain are all missing from this
film. What is recorded here is the printed information at the top of all manifests with the
blanks not completed. What does appear at the top of the film is "Peru Oct 19 '96 from Hong
Kong." The third paragraph is a stamp placed at the bottom of the sheet. The signature
 is illegible.

For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1896 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case O'Leary).

Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).

For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)

The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
 Height
 Complexion
 Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification

Occuption is Grocer except as noted below.

According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they
have some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.

 2-3 Occupation is Laborer.
3 It looks like ditto marks in the Last Residence column, making it Philadelphia but
the recapitulation lists only one passenger for Philadelphia.
4 Last Residence has Butte Co. with Chico and S. F. written above in two different hands.
5 Third name has a upstroke at the end that could make it Doore.
6 Last Residence has Bouldin Island with S. F. written above.
12 Occupation is "Married Woman."
13 Last Residence is Alameda, crossed out and replaced with Oakland.
15 Last Residence is Placer Co Cal crossed out and replaced by Iowa Hill.
16 Last Residence is Napa Cal crossed out and replaced by St Helena.
17 Last Residence is Napa Cal crossed out and replaced by Calistoga.
18 Last Residence is Napa Cal crossed out and replaced by Calistoga.
19 Last Residence is Santa Cruz crossed out and replaced by Watsonville.
20 Occupation is "Married Woman."
21 Occupation is "with his father."
22 Occupation is "with his father."
23 Occupation is "with Mother."
24 Occupation is "Married Woman."
25 Occupation is "Student."
26 Occupation is "Female with Mother." There is a second Landed stamp in the line below
that for this passenger but there is no name, age or occupation to go with it. It is
probably the infant listed in the Recapitulation.
35 The means of transportation to Mexico for this passenger is too faint to read. However,
      most passengers traveled by rail.
