Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.
Question marks replace illegible information or letters.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1896 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case O'Leary, except as noted below).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
Occupation is Grocer for all passengers except as noted below.
The following columns had no entries:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
Salina Cruz is on the Pacific coast of Mexico.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they
have some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
There are two passengers listed as Return or Treaty Laborer. When the Chinese Exclusion
Act was passed in 1882 a number of Chinese who had spent time in the US but had returned
to China at the time of the Act were excluded from returning to the US until 1894 when the
act was amended.
1,2 Inspector is Grant.
3 Second name is Liu or lin.
4 Occupation is "married woman."
5 Occupation is "with her parents."
4,5 Inspector is Harrison.
15 Third name is Jui or Lui.
16 Inspector is Grant.
19 Occupation is "to join his father." Last Residence could be Los Angeles, indicated by
"do" (ditto) obscured by the Landed stamp. Inspector is Harrison.
28 See note above about Return Laborer.
31 Occupation os "with his uncle."
41 See note above about Treaty Laborer.
95,96 These passengers are on an entirely separate sheet that has the heading that appears at
the top of the first page for a list. In the boiler-plate where it says it is a list
of "all Chinese passengers taken on board" the word Cabin has been inserted before the
word passengers. The Sworn Statement is dated June 10, but since the name of the ship
and of the Captain are the same as for the other passengers transcribed here it must be
the same arrival for the same ship, June 5. June 5 appears on the cover sheet as well.
95 Occupation is Merchant.
96 Occupation is married woman.
