Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.
Question marks replace illegible information or letters.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
The Sworn Statement is dated 6th but 5th is written in above it. The cover sheet
is also dated July 5.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1896 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case Sprague except as noted below).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
Occupation is Merchant for all San Francisco passengers except as noted below and
Grocer for all other passengers.
The following columns had no entries:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
Salina Cruz is on the Pacific coast of Mexico.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they
have some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
1,2,4 Inspector is O'Leary.
7 Inspector is O'Leary.
8 Inspector is Bryant.
13-17 Occupation is "to join her father." Inspector is Bryant.
20 Inspector is Meredith.
21-36 The numbers in the No of Certificate column are probably No of Ticket. The numbers
of these passengers' tickets suggest that they were cabin passengers.

24 Occupation is Missionary.
25 Occupation is wife of #557.
26-29 Occupation is son of #557.
