SEPARATE LIST OF CHINESE PASSENGERS Act May 6th, 1882
I, William Finch, Master of the Br Str Gaelic do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the
following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector
of the Customs of the Collection District of San Francisco, is a full and perfect list
of all Chinese passengers taken on board the said vessel at Hong Kong from which port said
vessel has now arrived, or that have been taken on board the said vessel at any foreign
port or place, and of all such passengers now on board said vessel, and that on said List
is truly designated the names and other particulars, as shown by their respective
certificates.So help me God. (signature) Wm Finch

The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1896 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case not signed).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)

Torreon is in central Mexico. Bluefields is on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua.
San Benito is an island off the coast of Baja Cailfornia.
There are a number of passengers listed as Return Laborer. When the Chinese Exclusion Act
was passed in 1882 a number of Chinese who had spent time in the US but had returned to
China at the time of the Act were excluded from returning to the US until 1894 when the
act was amended. A Section 6 Permit is a Merchant's Affidavit issued in China rather than
that collected from white neighbors or associates in the U.S.
There a a number of passengers with u or U as a name. It is difficult to tell whether it is
upper case or lower case. It usually has a diacritical mark above it that could be a caret,
a tilde or even an acute accent.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they
have some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
419-420 Are described as wife and child of above.
422-423 Are described as wife and child of above.
424 Is described as "daughter of of Ng Wah."
495 Is "with uncle #126."
496 Is "with cousin #137."
550 This passenger proceeded by steamer but the remainder of the note is illegible.
533 Is listed with name and age between passengers numbered 494 and 495, crossed
out with the note "see Torreon."
