Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.
Question marks replace illegible information or letters.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1896 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case O'Leary).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
Occupation is Grocer for all passengers except as noted below.
Last Residence is not entered for all passengers. For San Frncisco passengers it
is possible that the blanks below an entry had ditto marks that did not film well.
The following columns had no entries:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
Torreon is in Central Mexico. Demerara is in Guyana.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they
have some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
There are a number of passengers listed as Return Laborer. When the Chinese Exclusion Act
was passed in 1882 a number of Chinese who had spent time in the US but had returned to
China at the time of the Act were excluded from returning to the US until 1894 when the act
was amended.
2 Second name is Dang or Dong.
5 There is another name in parentheses: Jung Num.
6 There is another name in parentheses: Jay Ben.
7 There is another name in parentheses: Y? Ben. The first name could be Yi or Yu
8 Occupation in "with uncle #9."
