Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the condition of the manifest or handwriting of the original recorder. The recorder's hand writing was generally careless, except when he wrote "United States of America". What appears to be a "u" is most often an "a", sometimes an "o", "n" or part of an "m". The recorder used "do" (ditto) wherever appropriate (under last names, occupations, countries). The "do"s have been replaced with the intended entries. The passengers' names on the manifest were in normal (first, MI, last) order. They are rearranged here, with last names first, for ease of reference. The manifest has two columns for age (years and months). They are combined into one column here. The figures "2" and "3" were often difficult to differentiate. Likewise, the digit 5 might sometimes be construed as a 2 or 3. If a name was shortened by the recorder with a blank or written as super-script, it is noted as "^" - for example, "Marg t" is noted as Marg^t. Otherwise, all spelling is as recorded. In columns where nothing is recorded, nothing was recorded on the original manifest. Captain's statement: word illegible. Number of tons is in the fold of the document and is not legible. 5: Sex appears to be incorrect. 13: Age is in the fold of the document and is not legible. 14: Word written above Clerk is not legible. 17: Sex appears to be incorrect. 22: Age is noted as 7 1/2 years. 25: Word written above Servant is not legible. 91: Word written above Clerk is not legible. 104: Age is noted as 1 1/2 years. 111: Sex appears to be incorrect. 163: Number is either a 0 or a 9. 169: Name appears as Jornise or Jounse.
