If your ancestors arrived before 1800, you may have difficulty finding a passenger manifest. Some ports began indexing passenger manifests in 1800; New York began in 1820. Lists prior to that time are frequently compilations of other documents. Visit Genealogical Publishing Company for the largest collection of resource material, especially if your ancestors arrived early.

I, R Sheppard, do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed with my name, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs for the District of New York, contains, to the best of my knowledge and belief, a just and true account is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said Br Ship Art Union whereof I am Master, from calcutta.
