Transcriber's Notes:

The use of an * after a passenger number is used to call your attention to additional
information in the Transcriber’s notes below.

The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read due to the quality
of the original document.

General notes: This manifest was apparently prepared carelessly. While the captain
certified that “on said list is truly designated the age, sex, and the occupation of
each said passengers the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage the
country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each
to become an inhabitant,” it simply isn’t true. The gender is missing for a number of
passengers. Similarly, the first names of some men and the full names of women, children
and infants are not always provided in the manifest. In addition, several first names
are abbreviated. Gender, on the original manifest was variously spelled out or abbreviated.
Where gender was given in the manifest, it is abbreviated here as M or F for consistency.
In order to conserve space, the term “United States” has been abbreviated to “US.”

1-37 The first writer of the manifest wrote “I Cabin” at the top center of the first page to
indicate that all who followed were in the First Cabin. The remaining persons to write
the manifest noted the “First Cabin” location in the appropriate column (or did not note
it at all). For the purpose of consistency as well as to conserve space, the “I Cabin”
and “First Cabin” passengers have been designated as “1C” in the appropriate column.
3 The letters following the first “G” are written tightly together and so could be “es,”
        “ei,” or “u.”
10 A letter of the Harting name on line 9 runs through the name on line 10 so that the
fourth letter of Wic?lkin could be either an “h” or a “k.”
12-13 The city, “Annaber,” is clearly written, but it is probably “Annaberg.”
16 The “Hch” is clearly written but the name it represents is not known for certain. It
may be an abbreviation for Hupprecht. While it may also be an abbreviation for Heinrich,
the abbreviation “Heinr,” used elsewhere in the manifest, would suggest that Hch is not
short for Heinrich in this instance.
20 The gender is noted as masculine but the name appears to be feminine. This may have been
        an unintentional error in recording.
26 If the abbreviation “Chas” represents “Charles” the gender is incorrect.
28 The gender is noted as masculine but the name appears to be feminine. This may have been
        an unintentional error in recording.
31 The gender is noted as feminine but the name appears to be masculine. This may have been
        an unintentional error in recording.
32-33 There is a notation “Dining Salon” before room M.
33 The town is clearly spelled Kollenraus. However, an atlas of German place names reflects
only the name “Kollenrade.” [Ludwig Ravenstein, An atlas of the German Empire, Leipzig
1883, digitally reproduced by the University of Wisconsin Madison].
34 The “Hch is clearly written but the name it represents is not known for certain. It may
be an abbreviation for Hupprecht. While it may also be an abbreviation for Heinrich, the
abbreviation “Heinr,” used elsewhere in the manifest, would suggest that Hch is not
short for Heinrich in this instance.
35-36 An illegible symbol appears before the room number. A note indicates that Room 56 is on
        “One Deck.”
43 Ink spread on the fourth letter; the remaining letters are reasonably clear as given
        above.
43-44 The actual manifest reads “Madam Sch?einer & child.” It might be assumed that the
child’s last name is also Sch?eimer but the manifest does not provide that information.
The individual who wrote this section of the manifest has indicated relationship, such
as “daughter,” in other instances. Since it was not done in this instance, the
relationship is not clear. Thus, the child’s last name is designated as Unnamed.
45-46 The actual manifest reads “Mr. John Mayer & Lady.” The use of the term “lady” is
typical throughout the manifest and may not signify “wife” since there are occasions
in the document in which “wife” is clearly specified. Thus, the person is identified
        as Unnamed.
47-48 The actual manifest reads “Mr. Robert & brother.” It is assumed here that the ten year
old has the same last name as Mr. Robert, but the manifest does not provide that
        information.
49-52 The actual manifest reads: “Madam Lebeuf & 3 daughters 14 16 12” with the daughters
included on one line. It was broken down here for clarity. It has been assumed here
that all three daughters had the same last name although the manifest does not provide
        that information.
53-54 The actual manifest reads “Mr. Brier & Lady.” The use of the term “lady” is typical
throughout the manifest and may not signify “wife” since there are occasions in the
document in which “wife” is clearly specified. Thus, the person is identified as
        Unnamed.
55-56 The actual manifest reads “Mr. Trumble & Lady.” The use of the term “lady” is typical
throughout the manifest and may not signify “wife” since there are occasions in the
document in which “wife” is clearly specified. Thus, the person is identified as
        Unnamed.
60 The passenger is listed simply as “wife.” The last name is assumed to be the same as
        passenger number 59.
61 The servant is not identified by name.
65 Several letters of the last name are illegible. Ungnch is the closest rendering.
68-69 The actual manifest reads “Mr. Reusner his Lady.” The use of the term “lady” is
typical throughout the manifest and may not signify “wife” since there are occasions
in the document in which “wife” is clearly specified. Thus, the person is identified
        as Unnamed.
70-71 The manifest actually reads “Miss & Servant.” Neither the “Miss” nor “servant” is
identified and thus must be described as Unnamed.
75-76 The actual manifest reads “Mr. Uhlmyer & Lady.” The use of the term “lady” is typical
throughout the manifest and may not signify “wife” since there are occasions in the
document in which “wife” is clearly specified. Thus, the person is identified as
        Unnamed.
77 The last letter of the name Duta? is partially illegible. It may be an “l” may be a
“c.” The center “t” does not seem to be a “v.”
78-79 The actual manifest reads “Madam Duta? Child Servant.” It might be assumed that the
child’s last name is also Duta? but the manifest does not provide that information.
The individual who wrote this section of the manifest has indicated relationship, such
as “daughter,” in other instances. Since it was not done in this instance, the child’s
last name is designated as Unnamed. Equally Unnamed is the name of the servant.
96-98 The actual manifest reads Mr Wolf Lady & infant.” The name “lady” is indented under Mr
Wolf suggesting that they are traveling together but without an identified relationship
among Mr Wolf, the lady or the infant. The latter two individuals are thus designated
        as Unnamed.
99-102 Only the males are identified by last name. The females are not and are thus designated
        as Unnamed.
104-105 The actual manifest reads “Mr Manville & Lady.” The use of the term “lady” is typical
throughout the manifest and may not signify “wife” since there are occasions in the
document in which “wife” is clearly specified. Thus, the person is identified as
        Unnamed.
115-118 The actual manifest reads “I Roblain, wife & infant servant.” It is assumed here that
all but the servant have the same last name, although it is not so indicated. The
servant is not named and is thus designated as Unnamed.
119-120 Marie Loveland’s first and last names are given. Martha’s last name is not; and although
there is no mark under Marie’s last name of “Loveland” there is a space suggesting that
        Martha has the same name.
136-241 The preparer of the manifest has a center page heading reading “II Cabin” for passengers
136-190. For passengers 191-241, the notation “Second Cabin” is in the appropriate
column. For the purpose of consistency, as well as to conserve space, “II Cabin” and
“Second Cabin” passengers are designated “2C” in the correct column.
136-140 There is a bracket enclosing passengers 136-139 with the notation “one baby.” Thus,
“Baby Witte” has been added as passenger 140.
144 The name Herm may be an abbreviation for Hermann or Herminius.
147 “Hch W^m” would appear to be an abbreviation for Hupprecht William. While it may also be
an abbreviation for Heinrich William, the abbreviation “Heinr,” used elsewhere in the
manifest, would suggest that Hch is not short for Heinrich in this instance.
148-150 The actual manifest has a bracket around the Schutte’s with the note “one baby.” Thus,
“Baby Schutte” has been added as passenger 150.
152 Doters’ age appears to be 38, but could be 31.
155-156 There is a bracket around the Sengsbrachen’s but the note is illegible. It does not
appear to say “one baby” as in other instances in this manifest.
159 The middle two letters of “G??h,” which appears to be an abbreviation in any event, run
together and are almost illegible. It seems to read “Goch.”
161-162 Passenger 161 is written on the manifest as given here. However, on the line of
passenger 162, there is a “do” under Seebeck indicating the same last name. A first name
is not given nor is any other data of the individual traveling with Joh Seebeck.
165 The handwriting for the first name or its abbreviation is not clear. It might be “Jotte”
        or “Jtte.”
167 The first name is illegible. It appears to be “Kasme.”
174 “Joh Hch” may be an abbreviation for Johannes Hupprecht. While “Hch” may also be an
abbreviation for Heinrich, the abbreviation “Heinr,” used elsewhere in the manifest,
would suggest that Hch is not short for Heinrich in this instance.
176 “Joh” appears to be an abbreviation for Johannes.
174-192 A note indicates that passenger 174 is housed in “lower Deck forward.” It appears that
passengers 175-192 may be in the lower deck forward as well, simply from the manner in
        which their rooms were written.
187 The occupation appears to start with a small “b;” the next two letters look like “o’s”
but the first has a dot over it as if it were an “i.” Without the dot, the occupation
        would spell “bookmaker.”
210-212 The actual manifest reads “Madam Sternbach & 2 children 5 & 6” with a quote sign under
the gender of Madam Sternbach suggesting that both children are girls. It might also be
assumed that the passengers are the children of Madam Sternbach with the same last name
but it is only a supposition, since they are not described as “daughters” as it has been
done elsewhere in this manifest. Thus there are listed as Unnamed.
214 The name appears fairly clearly to be “Petermonsn” although it would seem that a vowel
is missing between the “s” and “n.”
217 The occupation is written as “Maker,” and very closely resembles the same word in “Sail
Maker” for passenger 207. In this instance, however, what he is a maker of, is missing.
225 The name appears to be “Guustner” or “Gnustner.”
230-231 Passenger 231 is probably the mother of married passenger 230 but her name is not given.
Thus, she is designated as “Unnamed.”
233-235 The actual manifest reads “John Wallace, wife, child & infant.” The child and infant are
grouped on one line with one notation of gender as female. The age of the infant is not
given. It is assumed here that all members of the family have the same last name.
