Transcriber's Notes:

The original handwriting on this passenger list is hard to read. It appears that a
determined effort was made to state the occupation of each United States passenger;
and in most cases, the writing is illegible.

Notes:
On March 3, 1871, Alfred and Elizabeth Mercer, and their children; Martha, Elizabeth,
Ellen, Hannah, David, Thomas, Laurie, and Sarah, started to America from Liverpool,
England, aboard the William F Storer, a ship operated by the Black Ball Line of New York.
Although his family had boarded the ship, he was detained by authorities for being lame.
When Alfred was a young man, he suffered an attack of what was known as 'white swelling';
which could have been an illness now known as infantile paralysis or polio. This illness
left him with one leg in an iron brace for the remainder of his life. Since immigrants
were to be healthy and productive in the new world, authorities feared he would not be.
He pleaded for the sake of his family and was granted permission to board ship. He bought
third class steerage passage, which offered little better accommodations than was given to
livestock.

The voyage took seven weeks to cross the ocean, arriving in New York on May 11, 1871,
during which time smallpox quarantined the ship in New York harbour for three weeks.
Alfred and two daughters were hospitalized for two weeks with the disease. After the
family was reunited, they travelled to Chase County, Kansas where other family members
were living. It was in Chase County that they spent the rest of their lives.

Alfred and Elizabeth Mercer are the great grandparents of Reta Belle Riggs Cox
National Archives and Records Administration, Film M237, Reel 342, List 384.
