I, Henry Tibbits, Master of the S.S. City of Washington, do
solemnly, sincerely, and truly (blank) that the following List or Manifest,
subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of
the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the
Passengers taken on board the said S.S. City of Washington at Liverpool from
which Port the said S.S. City of Washington has now arrived; and that on said
List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said
passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the
country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by
each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth
the number of said Passengers who have died on said Voyage and the names and
ages of those who died.

Transcriber's Notes:
A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be transcribed
definitely.
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the
manifest or something in the Transcriber's Notes to which the reader should refer.
A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted.
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates given names by writing the first few
letters of the name, then skipping letters and then writing the final letter as
superscripted. In these cases, the transcriber uses the symbol (^) to indicate that
the following letter is superscripted, i.e., Tho^s for Thomas, W^m for William, etc.
For many of the passengers, the recorder employs an abbreviated version of their
given name, such as "Chas" for Charles, "Thos" for Thomas, "Patk" for Patrick, "Hy"
for Henry, "Ml" for Michael, "Jno" for John, "Geo" for George and "Jas" for James.
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates a passenger's Occupation, such as
"Mech" for Mechanic, "Lab" for Laborer and "Inft" for Infant.
The entry "U. S. of America" in the native country and destination country columns
is shortened to "U. States" for formatting reasons. "Male" and "Female" in the
Sex column are shortened to "M" and "F" for the same reason.
25 Given name is not clearly written and cannot be deciphered with certainty, but
name begins with "G" followed by three or four undecipherable letters. Name
appears to be written as "Gues".
26-27 Surname is not clearly written and cannot be deciphered with certainty, but
name begins with "C" followed by four or five undecipherable letters. Name
appears to be written as "Cunes", "Curres or "Cirnes".
31 Surname appears to be written as "Hoages", but might possibly be "Hodges".
34 Given name is not clearly written and cannot be deciphered with certainty, but
name appears to have about six letters and to end with "yo".
41-41 Surname is either "Hagan" or "Hogan".
58 Surname appears to be written as "Mullen", but might possibly be "Muller".
57-63 Passengers' Occupations are not recorded nor are there ditto marks to indicate
that the Occupation is "Miner", yet "Miner" may have been the recorder's
intention.
63 Passenger has the usually feminine given name "Emilie", yet Sex is recorded as
"Male" and Occupation "Miner", perhaps a recording error. Passenger is more
likely the wife of passenger 62 and mother of passenger 64.
65-67 Surname appears to be written as either "Termann" or "Fermann", and in the
later case, the surname might possibly actually be "Fuhrmann".
98 Surname is possibly "Gorsch", "Gorscho" or "Gorschd".
107 First letter of surname cannot be deciphered with certainty, but name is
possibly "Thowhan" or "Showhan".
119 Passenger's Occupation cannot be deciphered with certainty. Occupation
appears to be written as "Piener" or "Piercer".
126 Passenger's Occupation appears to be either "Worper" or "Warper".
137-138 These passengers are children yet their Occupation is listed as "Lab",
likely a recording error.
143 Surname is recorded as "Blivins", but might possibly be "Blevins".
158 First half of surname is faint and cannot be deciphered with certainty,
but name is possibly "Loveland".
163 Surname appears to be written as "Bunnan", but might possibly be
"Brennan", "Berman" or "Burman.
164 Surname is recorded as "Murtah", but might possibly be "Murtagh".
187 Surname begins with "Ho" followed by two undecipherable letters followed
by "itt" or "ett". Name is possibly "Hodsitt", "Hodsett" or "Hoatitt".
194 Surname is recorded as "Wolsely", but might possibly be "Wolseley".
215 Surname is recorded as "Kilgariff", but might possibly be "Kilgarriff".
216 Middle letters of surname are partially overwritten by the name of the
passenger above and are not decipherable.
