SS Tarifa
I, Michael Murphy, Master of the Steam Ship "Tarifa", do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said Steam Ship "Tarifa" at Liverpool and Queenstown from which Ports the said S.S. "Tarifa" has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said Voyage and the names and ages of those who died.

Transcriber's Notes:
A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be transcribed
definitely.
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the
manifest or something in the Transcriber's Notes to which the reader should refer.
A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted.
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates given names by writing the first few
letters of the name, then skipping letters and then writing the final letter as
superscripted. In these cases, the transcriber uses the symbol (^) to indicate that
the following letter is superscripted, i.e., Tho^s for Thomas, Mich^l Michael,
W^m for William, etc. Othertimes, the recorder abbreviates names by writing the
first few letters, skipping letters and then adding the final letter of the name,
i.e., Patk for Patrick, Margt for Margaret, Thos for Thomas, etc..
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates a passenger's Occupation, such as
"Lab^r" for Laborer, "Sptr" for Spinster and "Serv^t for Servant.
The Occupation of every adult male in steerage class is listed as "Lab^r". While no
doubt many passengers were Labourers, it challenges the imagination to believe that
not one of these more than 200 passengers is a "Farmer", "Clerk", "Miner" or other
occupation common to immigrants. Therefore, the recorded passenger Occupations
should be viewed with some skepticism.
The entry "United States" in the native country and destination country columns
is shortened to "U. States" for formatting reasons. "Male" and "Female" in the
Sex column are shortened to "M" and "F" for the same reason.
21 Given name appears to be written as "Hanz", but might possibly be "Hans".
Surname is recorded as "Christiason", but might possibly be "Christianson".
22 Surname is either "Buckeng" or Buckenz".
39 Surname is very faint and cannot be deciphered with certainty, but name
appears to be written as "Mainert" or "Mainerd".
41 Surname is possibly "Fentane", "Fenteni", "Fenton", "Fantin" or "Fanton".
59 Surname is recorded as "Cahil", but might possibly be "Cahill".
65 Surname is recorded as "Hallaron", but might possibly be "Hallaran"
or "Halloran".
83 Last half of surname is not carefully written and cannot be deciphered with
certainty, but name appears to be written as "Scampsswr", but might possibly
be "Schampser" or "Schampsur".
89-91 Surname is recorded as "Conor", but might possibly be "Connor" or "Connors".
113 Surname is recorded as "Masson", but might possibly be "Mason".
117 Surname appears to be either "Masch" or "Maseh".
119 Surname is possibly "Hohen", "Mohen", "Wohen" or "Kohen".
122 Given name is either "Geor" or "Giov".
134 Surname is recorded as "Kileher", but might possibly be "Kelleher".
175 Surname is recorded as "Garnar", but might possibly be "Garner".
183 A notation associated with this passenger states "See No. 287 for Infant".
184 Given name is not clearly written and cannot be deciphered with certainty,
but name appears to be written as "Minnie".
186 Surname is possibly "Netz" or "Metz".
