Bark Stella
I, B. Steengrafe*, Master of the "Stella", do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said "Stella" at Bremen, from which port said "Stella" has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied during the passage, the country to which each belongs,and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died.

An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the manifest
or something in the Transcriber's Notes to which the reader should refer.
A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted.
The transcriber numbers the passengers consecutively, even though they are not numbered
in the original manifest.
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates given names by writing only the first few
letters of the name, followed sometimes by a period but many times without it. For some
names the recorder abbreviates it by writing the first few letters then skipping letters
and then writing the final letter(s) as superscripted. In these cases, the transcriber
uses the symbol (^) to indicate that the following letter was superscripted, i.e., Fried^ke
for Friederike, Magd^a for Magdelena, and Joh^a for Johanna, etc.
The entry "United States" in the destination country column is shortened to "U. States"
for formatting reasons. "Male" and "Female" in the Sex column are shortened to M" and "F"
for the same reason.
