SS State of Nebraska
I, A. G. Braes, Master of the State of Nebraska do solemnly, sincerely, and truly (nothing filled in) that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board of the said State of Nebraska at Glasgow via Larne from which port said State of Nebraska has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died. A question mark (?) is used for letter/letters that cannot be read because of the
quality of the document. Where possible a suggestion is given in the transcriber's
notes of what this letter/letters may be.
An asterisk (*) is used to refer to an item in the transcriber's notes, which
further explains the entry.
The column, "Died on the voyage" was eliminated as there were only two deaths
on board during the voyage:
1. Passener 152, Franz Wisnewsky, 2, died on 4/5/81. Since the voyage did not
begin until April 22, it is presumed that he actually died May 4, 1881.
2. Passenger 183, Clara Deckes or Decker, age 4 died on the voyage, but no
date is recorded.
However, this column is eroded away at times and what may possibly be recorded
is not able to be seen, especially for the latter passengers from #825+.
The original lister recorded the names as given name and then surname; the
transcriber has reversed this order for ease in alphabetizing. The original
lister did not number the document; the numbering was done by the transcriber.
The listers (there were two) listed the occupation of Laborer as either Labr or
Lab. Mercht was the abbreviation of Merchant. Of the two listers, one wrote
exceedingly clearly; the other was very poor in his penmanship.
918 The passenger's name is clearly Mary, yet she is listed as a male.
971 This passenger is listed as a male, but is also listed as a "Mrs".
975 Surname: Berl, Bue
984 The surname appears to begin "Gr" or "Gi" or "Gu". Possibilities: Guer,
Greer, Grier, Gisc?
995 This surname is covered by the "y" that comes down from the previous
name. Possible surname: Sherrins, Sherins
1026 The missing letters in the surname are all on the line, neither going
above nor below the line and seems to be a combination of "e", "n" or "u".
McDunny, McDenny, McDeunny
1056 Surname: Probably McTear. The last letter is obscured by the "g" from
the above entry.
1058 Surname: The missing letters are all on the line, neither going above
nor below the line - as "r", "n", "u". Could the name be Coburn?
1081 Surname: Burns, Bains.
1087 Surname possibilities: Wen, Win, Wein, Wien.
1098 It seems difficult to believe that Mrs Wilson was placed in Steerage and
Mr Wilson was in the 2nd cabin. This is certainly a mistake.
1117 & 1118 These names are very much obscured by the black areas, which
indicate that the document was worn away at this spot.
1130 Surname: Fantame, Fautame
1139 Surname: Gingony, Gingr?y, Ging?ng
1164 Surname: Kurtz, Kuntz The given name is worn away.
1166 This name is entirely obscured due to damage to the original manifest.
1195 Surname: Reiley, Rilley
