I, Jas A Williams, Master of the S.S. "Manhattan", do
solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest,
subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of
the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the
Passengers taken on board the said S.S. Manhattan at (blank) from
which Ports the said (blank) has now arrived; and that on said
List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said
passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the
country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by
each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth
the number of said Passengers who have died on said Voyage and the names and
ages of those who died.

An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the
manifest or something in the Transcriber's Notes to which the reader should refer.
A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted.
The Age, Sex and Occupation of the Cabin passengers are not recorded.
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates given names by writing the first few
letters of the name, then skipping letters and then writing the final letter as
superscripted. In these cases, the transcriber uses the symbol (^) to indicate that
the following letter is superscripted, i.e., Tho^s for Thomas, Sam^l for Samuel,
W^m for William, etc. Othertimes, the recorder abbreviates names by writing the
first few letters, skipping letters and then adding the final letter of the name,
i.e., Patk for Patrick, Mgt or Margt for Margaret, Thos for Thomas, etc..
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates a passenger's Occupation, such as
"Lab" or "Labr" for Laborer, "Mech" for Mechanic, "Mat" for Matron, "Chd" for Child,
"Ift" or "Inft" for Infant, "Servt" for Servant, "Spin" for Spinster, and "Gent"
for Gentleman.
The entry "United States" in the native country and destination country columns
is shortened to "U. States" for formatting reasons. "Male" and "Female" in the
Sex column are shortened to "M" and "F" for the same reason.

27 Passenger's Sex is recorded as "Male", yet Occupation is listed as "Wife",
likely a recording error.
30 Surname is recorded as "O'Rouke", but might possibly be "O'Rourke".

51 Passenger's Age is either 30 or 32.
52 Passenger's Occupation is overwritten and cannot be deciphered with certainty,
but might possibly be "Wife".
