Hermann Bartsch was a well know lithographer and printer in NY city. He owned the General Printing House. Some of his drawings are in the NYC Public Library collection. He drew advertisements for several companies including Bosch of Germany. So, it's curious that his occupation is listed as a farmer on the ship manifest. After arriving in NY, Hermann attended Sing Academy and may have learned the printing trade there, but I do not know. I do not know who Hermann's parents were. Hermann was born in August of 1840. Other than the name Wiesenberg, Prussia on the manifest, I don't know where he was born. Hermann and Sophia Adler (von Adler) were married 27 Sep 1866 in New York City. They initially lived in Brooklyn and Hermann's business was in Manhattan. While in Brooklyn, they had six children: Anna Evelyn (my grandmother) and Rosalie E. (twins) 4 Sep 1878 Carl M. Sep 1880, who was an aspiring young artist when he died A son Emile, Jul 1867 Robert H. May 1871 and Sophie J. Dec 1875 Then they moved to Oradell, Bergan County NJ where Alfred H. Sep 1884 was born. For information, please contact Carl Weaver Correspondence added January 23, 2007, Passengers 18, 19 & 246 CZECH (1) Passengers #18 and 19 and 246 are as follows: *18 Vinzenz CZECH, age 30, from Bohemia, Marienbad, shoemaker; #19 Anna CZECH, age 26, from Bohemia, Marienbad; and #246 child M.CZECH, age 6 months. Anna was surnamed UTSCHIG, born in Marienbad, now Marianske Lazne in the Czech Republic, born 1 Sep 1828. Her parents are Johann UTSCHIG and Elisabeth SCHICKER. She is the sister of my great grandfather, Johann Nepomuk UTSCHIG. (He was about 5 or 6 years old when he immigrated, which was supposed to have been in 1853, though I have not as yet found his immigration record.) Vinzenz CZECH may be Vincenz LECH, if I translated his records correctly from the State Archives in Pilsen. He was born in Pilsen, now Plzen, Czech Republic, on 26 Sep 1823; parents are Johann LECH and Katharina POESL. Vincenz and Anna were married 9 Nov 1852 in Marienbad. They had a son Johann Nepomuk, christened 12 Jan 1853, who died 9 Feb 1853; and a daughter Amalia, christened 1 Feb 1854. Amalia would be the "M" Czech child, passenger #246. Millie is often used as a nickname for Amalia, so the "M" fits her. Again, thank you for all the work you have done in transcribing ships lists and having them posted on the internet. This was a great find for me, since I didn't know how many of my great great grandfather's childen immigrated to the U.S. (2) I appreciate your checking on the spelling of the name CZECH. I could have misinterpreted the handwriting on the church record I extracted Vincenz Lech from. I have a researcher doing some research for me in the Pilsen archives, and I believe this was one of the records I wanted him to look up and verify. He might not get back to me until February. You are welcome to include my information about this family on the passenger list of the Bark Lina. I know how important some of this information can be, so I am happy to do my part. My researcher takes pictures of the records and emails them to me, so if I get one for this family, I will be happy to email it on to you. I don't have any other information on this family. That's why this ship's manifest was so important to me. Anna, the wife of Vincenz, is the sister of my great grandfather John (Johann) Utschig, who lived in Manhattan, New York, and who later moved to San Francisco, California, about 1865. John's father, also Johann Utschig, born 1799 in Einsiedl (now Mnichov, Czech Republic) immigrated to the U.S. in 1853 and settled in Manhattan, New York. Three of his children came with him, but my great grandfather was not one of them. I cannot find his record of immigration, but he said he came in 1853 on the ship Maria. (He went back to Europe in 1890 and filled out an application for a passport, that's where I got the info on his immigration.) Thank you again for all the good work all of your transcribers do on these ships lists. I have gone through many microfilm records on ships trying to find my Utschig's, so I know the task it is!! If I haven't answered all your questions, please let me know. Mary Utschig Read
