Steamer La Gascogne
I, Santelli, Master of the Steamer La Gascogne do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, Subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of Customs of the Collection District of the City of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said Steamer at Le Havre from which port said Steamer has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the calling of each of said passengers, the location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the passage, the country of citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each, and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage and the names and cause of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each, also a true statement, so far as can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a protracted sojourn in this country.So help me God (signed)Sa?tel??

The word "citizen" is abbreviated as "Cit". He also listed a passengers' ability to read and write, for the Steerage passengers only, although the form did not require this information. This, too, is included as a column by the transcriber, listed as "no" or "yes". "PS" is the abbreviation used by the lister to denote a protracted sojourn. "Transient" would describe someone who may be staying for a short time, whereas "In transit" would indicate someone who is making an immediate connection to travel elsewhere. It appears that the original lister did not ask most passengers their intent, so he just listed them as Transient. It is difficult to believe that so many of the people did not know for certain that they would be residing permanently in the United States. The numbering of the document was partially done by the original lister. He began numbering at #1 again for the Steerage passengers; however, the transcriber continued the numbering consecutively. The original lister also included a recapitulation at the end of the Manifest. The original lister recorded given name and then surname for the First and Second Class passengers; however, the transcriber has reversed this for ease in alphabetizing.
