Transcriber's Notes:
The name of this ship appears to be written as "Jenny", but might possibly be
"Penny".
A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that cannot be transcribed
definitely.
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the
manifest or something in the Transcriber's Notes to which the reader should refer.
A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted.
The transcriber numbers the passengers consecutively, even though they are not
numbered in the original manifest.
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates given names by writing only the first
few letters of the name, followed sometimes by a period but many times without it,
e.g., Jos for Joseph, Fr. for Friedrich, Henr for Henrich, Bernh for Bernhard, etc.
For some names the recorder abbreviates it by writing the first few letters then
skipping letters and then writing the final letter, i.e., Henre for Henriette,
Wilhe for Wilhelmine, Magda or Magdl for Magdelena, and Johe for Johanne, etc.
The recorder did not use ditto marks to indicate "same as above". Many surname, sex
and occupation entries are left blank and the reader is confronted with the problem of
interpreting the recorder's intended meaning. The transcriber uses the surname of the
passenger above for cases of children whose surname is left blank, and uses the sex last
entered for a passenger above, and correlates this interpretation with whether the
passenger has a masculine or feminine given name. Occupations are only given in the
transcription if the recorder entered them. Since it was common for recorders not to
make an entry in the occupation column for female passengers or for children, a possible
though not a certain interpretation of the intended occupation where left blank is that
of the occupation of the last adult male entered above.
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates a passenger's Occupation, such as
"Merch" for "Merchant", "Mech" for Mechanic, "Servt" for Servant and "Labr" for Laborer.
13 Surname appears to be written as "Pruessen", but might possibly be "Preussen".
21-22 Passengers' Ages are not recorded, but from the context the Ages are likely
12 years old and younger.
23 Given name is either "Dar." or "Dav."
24 Given name is written as "Seigfr.", but might possibly be "Siegfr.".
52 Surname appears to be written as "Platawsky", but might possibly be "Platowsky".
54 Surname is either "Karmarzin" or "Karmargin".
60 Surname is either "Baelzer" or "Baelger".
83 Surname is posssibly "Mildner", "Moldner" or "Meldner".
85 Given name appears to be written as "Elias", but might possibly be "Elise".
95 Passenger's Age is either 33y1m or 25y1m.
107 A notation associated with this infant passenger states that she "Died" on the
voyage. The time, date and cause of death are not recorded on the manifest.
109 A notation associated with this child passenger states that he "Died" on the
voyage. The time, date and cause of death are not recorded on the manifest.
111 A notation associated with this passenger states that she "Died" on the
voyage. The time, date and cause of death are not recorded on the manifest.
112 A notation associated with this child passenger states that he "Died" on the
voyage. The time, date and cause of death are not recorded on the manifest.
124 Middle letters of surname are not carefully formed and cannot be deciphered
with certainty, but name is possibly "Thulben" or "Thueben".
127 Surname appears to be written as "Drayer", but might possibly be "Dreyer".
138-139 Surname appears to be either "Kahrhoff" or "Kahshoff".
150 A notation associated with this child passenger states that he "Died" on the
voyage. The time, date and cause of death are not recorded on the manifest.
152 A notation associated with this infant passenger states that he "Died" on the
voyage. The time, date and cause of death are not recorded on the manifest.
189 Middle letters of surname are not carefully formed and cannot be deciphered with
certainty, but name might possibly be "Spaimhake", "Sparmhake" or Spannhake".
183 Surname is either "Labke" or "Lubke".
202 A notation associated with this passenger states that he "Died" on the
voyage. The time, date and cause of death are not recorded on the manifest.
Passenger's Age is not recorded.
203 Surname is possibly "Hatzald", "Hatzold" or "Hatzuld".
206 A notation associated with this passenger states that he or she was "Born" on
the voyage. The Sex of the infant is not recorded.
211 Surname appears to be either "Hendler" or "Handler".
Correspondence added June 13, 2008 passengers #95-99, LANDGRACHE (correct old-world spelling is LANDGRAEBE).
Please change the surname of passengers #95–99 from “Landgrache” to “Landgraebe”.
Passengers #95-99 are my ancestors. The father (passenger #95) was Johann George LANDGREB (as the
surname has become in the United States). The mother (passenger #96) was Anna Martha {maiden name
unknown}, and passengers #97-99 were their children. In the 1870 US Census, we find them as
"LANDGRAVE" living in Pittsburgh, PA. The father Johann died in Pittsburgh on 31 Dec 1874 and
within a few years Anna Martha remarried to my 2nd great grandfather Johannes VON ALMEN and they
resided in Beaver Falls, PA north of Pittsburgh. Thus, Anna Martha was my 2nd great-grandmother
and I am descended from her daughter Rose VON ALLMEN from that marriage.
Passenger #96 - Anna Martha (VON ALLMEN at the time of her death) died in Beaver Falls, PA on
3 Apr 1899.
Passenger #97 - The son Johann (John) married Eliza Jane HENKLE and he died in Beaver County,
Pennsylvania on 1 Jan 1903.
Passenger 98 - William married Maria ERICHSEN. He died in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, 11 Sep 1939.
Passenger 99 - Elisabeth married Christlieb HOLK and they moved to Salem, Ohio. She died 19 Jul 1952.
Anyone researching these surnames please contact Steve Bloomquist, Pittsburgh, PA, USA
