Transcriber's Notes:

There is no citation page for this ship which indicates the port of embarkation, the
port of arrival, the columnar headings, the tonnage and the date of arrival. This
could indicate that the list is not complete. The original listor did not number the
passengers, nor did he provide a recapitulation, so it is impossible to determine if
the list is complete; however the number of passengers is typical of a ship of this
date. The date of arrival and the embarkation port are from a heading
page filed with the manifest in New York upon arrival.

A question mark (?) is used for letter/letters that cannot be read because of the
quality of the document. Where possible a suggestion is given in the Transcriber's
Notes of what this letter/letters may be.

An asterisk (*) is used to refer to an item in the transcriber's notes, which
further explains the entry.

The original lister recorded the names as given name and then surname; the
transcriber has reversed this order for ease in alphabetizing and reference.

Most of the time the original lister listed the entire family as having the same
occupation as the head of the household. There are several instances when he left
this column blank and the transcriber has noted this with a dash.

This lister was particularly careless with names of towns (and possibly family names).
Although he used umlauts, he did not seem to be conversant with German, nor did he seem
to know American city names (for example he spelled what is probably Nashville as
Neschville), He seemed to write down what he heard. At times the transcriber has listed
possibilities of what the town name may be; at other times, it is impossible to
determine. Where the lister had left out one letter, this has been added, an example
for #75, the lister wrote: Hasteneck and the town is Hastenbeck. The transcriber listed
it as Hastenbeck.

The lister spelled occupations in a peculiar manner. Masson is a mason, Joyner is a
joiner and a Segarmaker is a cigarmaker. Prussen, from whence so many of these passengers
came is Prussia.

Correspondence added July 15, 2008 passengers #201-206 MONNICH

The MONNICHs were travelling to TROY NY not Detroit. I have a copy of the original manifest where their destination is recorded as "De 'Troy'". I guess the purser had never heard of TROY, but Detroit was a popular destination so a 'De" was added. The Monnichs joined their relatives in Troy. These relatives were called 'MINK' not Monnich. I guess the name had been corrupted due to the sound of the umlaut. Anyway, Joseph MONNICH became Joseph MINK and was my grandfather. He married Elizabeth LEE (Irish-born) and they had 11 children, only 8 lived to adulthood. Their son, Alfred, was my father. They lived in New York City. Joseph died in 1917, Elizabeth in 1942.
Thank You. Geraldine MINK
