Transcriber's Notes:

* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not the
   transcriber, or is used to call your attention to additional information in
   the Transcriber's Notes below.

? The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read due to quality
   of the original document.

^ The use of a ^ indicates that the letter/letters following are superscripted.

: The use of a : may indicate an abbreviated name or title.

   The writing at the top of the first page is partially illegible and it is not known
   what the various notations refer to. Based on another manifest for a voyage of this
   ship with this captain in command:
   -the name of the ship is 'Great Britain';
   -the captain's name is John Gray;
   -the number '3300' is probably the burthen tonnage;
   -'New York' is the Port of Arrival.

   The file for this manifest lists an arrival date of 12 August 1858 which differs
   from the date written on the page; perhaps the ship arrived and was placed into
   quarantine on 28 July 1858 and released to disembark the passengers on 12 August
   1858.

   The manifest scribe assigned numbers to passengers in groups; these could be groups
   traveling together or assigned to the same Space on the ship. For reader's interest,
   these numbers are listed in the far right column. Note that assigned numbers 34 and
   307 were not used.

   The manifest scribe modified an older manifest form for use on this voyage. The form
   used has columns to identify the Age Group (Adults of 12 years and up, Children
   between 1 & 12 years of age, and Infants; within these groups, additional grouping
   allows the scribe to enter the Marital Status and Sex for each passenger. These
   columns have been modified in the transcription to conform with ISTG guidelines.
   Other pre-printed column headings on the manifest include:
   -Profession, Occupation, or Calling of Passengers;
   -English, Scottish, Irish, Other Parts (to indicate Country of Origin), including
    sub-columns to enter by Age group;
   -Port at which Passengers have contracted to land.

 A recapitulation written at the end of the first 62 passengers lists the following:

   -Adults: Married, Males 2, Females 6; Single, Males 44, Females 5
   -Children: Male 3, Female 0
   -Infants: Male 1 Female 1.

   -English: Adults, 50; Children 3; Infants 2
   -Scottish: none
   -Irish: Adults 7, Children and Infants 0

   (Signed) John Gray

 A recapitulation written at the end of the manifest lists the following:

   -Adults: Married, Males 3, Females 4; Single, Males 12, Females 2
   -Childen: Male 3, Female none
   -Infants: none

   The Summary reads:

   -Adults: English 50; Scotch none; Irish none; Other parts 7; Total 57
   -Children between 1 and 12: English 3; Total 3
   -Infants: English 2; Total 2

   -Total English: 55
   -Total Scottish: none
   -Total Irish: none

   Note that these figures appear to refer to only the Steerage passengers.

   There are an additional two columns to the right of the above summary entitled
   Stat? and Adults with entries noted only under the first column:
   -Adults: 57
   -Children between 1 and 12: 1 1/2
   -Infants: (no entry)
   -Total: 58 1/2

All ditto marks on the original manifest have been replaced with the actual words
indicated.

The manifest scribe used vertical lines probably to indicate continuation/duplication
of the last written word(s).

14 Last letter of surname not clear, could be Bowder or Bowdes.
16 1st number of Age not clear, could be 22y or 32y.
30 Ending of surname not clear, could be Duffies.
41 2nd number of Age illegible.
45 Age smeared, illegible, less than 10y.
54 Ending of first name illegible.
60-61 Names are probably Joseph Rollin and Niles Rollin.
68 Passenger name lined out, no other information provided.
73  Middle initial faded, illegible.
81 Ending of first name illegible.
83  Ending of Occupation illegible.
