I, Wilh. Gopser* Master of the S. S. Donau do solemnly, sincerely and truly (blank) that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of the City of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said S. S. Donau at Bremen from which port S. S. Donau has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the calling of each of said passengers; the location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the passage, the country of citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage and the dates and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; also a true statement, so far as can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a protracted sojourn in this country. A question mark indicates material difficult or impossible to decipher.
An asterisk indicates an explanatory footnote.
The superscript sign ^ indicates a name has been abbreviated and a small letter
written above the normal line.
This list uses a form for the port of New York and then crosses out New York in the
title line of the form and has Baltimore written above it. Then in the sworn statement
the term: New York remains. Since the destination for many of the passengers was
Md (i.e. Maryland), it seems that Baltimore is indeed the port of destination.
The name of the ship "Donau" is the German form for the River Danube.
The original list is badly damaged; thus, much information is not decipherable or
even available.
The entries indicating origin as Russia or Prussia are sometimes difficult to
decipher because of the writer's Pr or R.
Passengers # 1-49 are listed as cabin passengers. Others have a compartment number
listed, i.e. I, II, III Compt or just the Roman numeral. Accomodation for one
passenger, #50 is listed as Steerage.
There seems to be some Anglicization of Germanic names on this list, i.e. Johan would
normally be Johann in German and:
Miller=Mueller, Muller (with an umlaut),
Herman=Hermmann,
Yanke=Janke.
Captain's name has an umlauted "o"
348 Given name may start with an "M" Age may be 14.
348-350 Because of the damaged original it is unclear whether the surname (indicated)
elsewhere by ditto marks) should be Heringhaus, but I believe it to be.
Hence, M? Heringhaus, Bertha Heringhaus, Johanna Heringhaus for these three
entries.
359 Surname has an umlauted "o" thus may also be Schroeder.
384 See passenger #672. Note says baby Franz born on board 30 Aug.
410-414 Entry for #410 is almost obliterated. It looks like the surname may begin with
an "F" and the third letter loops below the line. Because ditto marks are used
in the succeeding entries, the surname for #411-414 is lost. Also, country of
origin may be Prussia instead of Russia.
415 Surname may be Pacsnik or Paasnik.
419 Surname is either Prathert or Rathert.
420 Wonder if this should be Knut Schermann?
438-444 Destination looks like Pa i.e. Pennsylvania.
447-451 Surname has an umlauted "o" so may also be Goetze.
459 Surname may be Borna.
461 Surname has an umlauted "o" so may also be Boeschen.
462 Surname has an umlauted "u" so may also be Schuerle.

618 Perhaps given name should be Friede. Country of origin may be Prussia.

Philipp Bittinger, my maternal great grandfather, was born to Kaspar &
Katherina Schmitt Bittinger on November 03, 1871 in Eimsheim, Rhinehessen,
Germany. He had four siblings. To my knowledge they all remained in
Germany. Sometime in his youth, he left Eimsheim and lived in Guntersblum,
Rhinehessen, Germany with his aunt. I believe his parent's passed away and
his aunt took him in. From there he left for America for Baltimore,
Maryland. There was a settlement in Maryland that became the town known as
Bittinger in Maryland. It is quite possible someone there sponsored
Philipp's passage to America. The Donau passenger list is badly damaged
where Philipp's name appears. It looks like the name says Phine Pittinger,
but I am 99.9% sure this is my Philipp -- all the data fits. In between
arriving in America and settling in Elgin, Kane County, Illinois, he met and
married [about 1891] Caroline "Carrie" Fierke. Together they settled in
Elgin, Kane County, Illinois and raised six children. Philipp died on June
8, 1926 after committing suicide over a property deal that went sour. Had
he chosen to NOT end his life, he would have found that the property
