I, William McMay, Master of the S.S. Chicago, do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said Vessel at Liverpool and Queenstown from which Ports the said Vessel has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said Voyage and the names and ages of those who died.

A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that cannot be transcribed
definitely.
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the
manifest or something in the Transcriber's Notes to which the reader should refer.
A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted.
The transcriber numbers the passengers consecutively, even though they are not
numbered in the original manifest.
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates given names by writing the first
few letters of the name. Other times he abbreviates given names by writing the
first few letters of the name, then skipping letters and then writing the final
letter sometime as superscripted and sometimes not. In these cases, the
transcriber uses the symbol (^) to indicate that the following letter is
superscripted, i.e., Sam^l for Samuel, Tho^s for Thomas, Rich^d or R^d for
Richard, Mich^l or M^l for Michael, etc.
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates a passenger's Occupation, such as
"Merch" or "Mercht" for "Merchant", "Lab^r" or "Labr" for Laborer, "Spin" for
Spinster, "Mat^n" or "Matn" for Matron, "Inf^t" or "Inft" for Infant and "Gent"
for Gentleman.
The entry "United States" in the destination country column is shortened to
"U. States" for formatting reasons. "Male" and "Female" in the Sex column is
shortened to "M" and "F" for the same reason.
Recorded surnames often do not correlate well with recorded nationalities.
Some families are split between nationalities if their records continue on to a
subsequent page of the maifest. For these and other reasons, the transcriber is
skeptical about the accuracy of some of the recorded entries in the
Native Country column.

12-13 Surname appears to be either "Angell" or "Augell".
14 Surname is recorded as "Henelly", but might possibly be "Hennelly".
32 Third, fourth and fifth letters of surname are not clearly written and
cannot be deciphered with certainty. Name appears to be written as
"Buosdale" or "Buasdale".
38 Surname is recorded as "Henery", but might possibly be "Henry"
or "Hemry".
48-49 Surname is recorded as "Bermstorf", but might possibly be "Bermsdorf"
or "Bernsdorf".
69 Surname is written as either "Brownstein" or "Brounstein", but might
possibly be "Brunstein".
77 The letters of the given name are not carefully formed and cannot be
deciphered with certainty, but first letter appears to be either "O" or
"P" followed by "e". Third letter appears to be either "o" or "s"
