Transcriber's Notes
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber, or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes. Question marks replace illegible information or letters. The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult. However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification of the film and reel numbers below. The following columns had no entries: Height Complexion Color of Eyes Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification If accredited officers of Chinese Government, state facts Permit No and Passport No columns were created by the original completer only for Honolulu passengers. Passengers for San Francisco have a column created just to the right of Age with entries of Male and Female. Presumably the F entry for Honolulu passengers in this same location refers to Female. For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger. Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp: Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1891 by Insp's (blank for a name, in this case Grant). Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps: Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them. Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date). For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions: Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date) Last Residence is China for all but the last passenger, 516, who is from Japan. At the bottom of the last page is written "477 Taken from Quarantine station Mch 1st 92 and sent to Honolulu per SS Belgic. 23 left on Island to depart per City of Peking Mch 2/92 [this sentence is crossed out] 500 above includes 4 work passage men not on list" "477 per Belgic Mch 1st 23 China Apr 23 500 17 of the 23 were landed IT" The Quarantine station was probably Angel Island which was opened for this purpose in 1890. The discrepancy between the number of passengers on the list and the total in the Recapitulation appears to be due to a difference in the number of Honolulu passengers. There are 498 names with 55 females but the Recapitulation lists only 496 with 53 females. It is not clear whether this is an error or whether two passengers were not counted for some reason. Both the cover sheet and the top of the list indicate January 20th as the arrival date. It is not clear why, if the ship arrived January 20th, passengers were neither landed nor proceeded elsewhere until March or April. According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they have some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886. 273 The cousin #261 mentioned appears out of order at the end of the list. 417-19 There are ink spots where the first 2 digits of the Permit No appear. It is difficult to decide whether these are crossouts or just blurs. Passengers 418 & 419 have ditto marks. 428 The Passport No appears to be the word "one." 509-512 The Permit No column says "Paul Newman letter" for these passengers. 516 This name is separated from those above by several spaces. The Permit No column says Letter of Hawaian Consul. Last Residence is Japan.
