* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.
Question marks replace illegible information or letters.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1891 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case Grant).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
Both the cover sheet and the top of the list indicate January 20th as the arrival date.
It is not clear why, if the ship arrived January 20th, passengers were neither landed
nor proceeded elsewhere until March or April.
The following columns had no entries:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
No of Ticket column was added for passengers not bound for Honolulu.
No of Permit and No of Passport columns were added for Honolulu passengers.
Sex column was added by the completer and has entries of Male and Female for
San Francisco passengers. Presumably the F entries for Honolulu passengers
in the same location refers to Female.
Only San Francisco passengers who were landed have Bond Nos, a column added by the completer.
Occupation is Merchant for all San Francisco and Havana passengers except as noted below.
Last Residence is China for all passengers.
The recapitulation at the end of this list [see page 2] counts 4 passengers for Havana and
1 for Panama. These are not explicitly identified but must be the 5 passengers listed
separately below those Landed or Refused. See notes below
At the bottom of the last page of this list [see page 2] is written
"477 Taken from Quarantine station Mch 1st 92 and sent to Honolulu per SS Belgic.
23 left on Island to depart per City of Peking Mch 2/92 [preceding sentence is crossed out]
500 above includes 4 work passage men not on list"
477 per Belgic Mch 1st
23 China Apr 23
500 17 of the 23 were landed IT
This Quarantine station was probably Angel Island. It was used for Quarantine before its use
by Immigration.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they
have some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
8-11 Occupation is "to join her husband."
8 No of Certificate is "?(possibly H) Center Letter # 99."
9 No of Certificate is "?(possibly H) Center Letter # 80."
14-17 These are probably passengers for Havana since their Transit Certs
indicate they may have proceeded by rail.
18 Probably was bound for Panama since he proceeded by ship.
25 Second name could be Oee but the first letter is different from other
Os on the list.
