Tremaine Smith, Master of the City of Peking do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of San Francisco, is a full and perfect list of all Chinese passengers taken on board the said vessel at Hong Kong from which port said vessel has now arrived, or that have been taken on board the said vessel at any foreign port or place, and of all such passengers now on board said vessel, and that on said List is truly designated the names and other particulars, as shown by their respective certificates.So help me God. The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1897 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case O'Leary).
The date in the Sworn Statement has 18th written in beside it. The cover sheet also says 18th.
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
Occupation is Grocer for all passengers except as noted below.

Demerara is in Guyana. Guaymas and Jimulco are in Mexico.
In the recapitulation the numbers 46 males and 51 Total for San Francisco were crossed out,
replaced by 48 and 53. There are 51 persons on the list described as destined for San Francisco.
The 2 passengers destined for New York are not otherwise accounted for in the recapitulation
and are probably these extras for San Francisco. The passengers for Jimulco and Guaymas are
not included at all. The recapitulation is at the very bottom of the page and it is possible
that part of it was cut off the film.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they have
some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
5 There is a note "Used in 30690/6-12." It is not clear what this means.
15 Landing Inspector is Meredith.
21,26,125 Second name of all these passengers starts with the same letter combination.
It looks most like Thun for passenger 21, Shew for 26 and Shun for 125.
126,127 Third name of all these passengers starts with the same letter combination as above.
It looks most like Shun for these passengers.
44 Second name is Gar or Gas.
48 Third name is probably Pan, although the P is formed differently from that in the second name.
100 Second name looks like Wod but could be Woo with an extraneous mark above the second o.
101 First name looks like Tam but could be Tom, the same as the succeeding three names.
166 Third name is Yin or Yui.
170-174 Occupation is Woman.
