Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.
Question marks replace illegible information or letters.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1892 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case Grant).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
The following columns had no entries:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
Occupation is Grocer for all passengers except as noted below.
Last Residence is China for all passengers.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they
have some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
21 Occupation is "with her aunt #63."
22 First name could be Lain or Lam. This passenger could also be "with her aunt" indicated
by ditto marks that are not legible.
28 Occupation is "with husband #33."
29 Occupation is "with her husband #62."
30 Occupation is "to join her husband Yue Fook ?ook Loy ??? Jackson St."
31 Occupation is "to join her husband." The husband appears to have been identified but
the information is not legible.
32 Occupation is "to join her husband Chun Tai." His address is obscured by the Refused stamp.
33 Occupation is "to join her husband Lew Fat." His address is obscured by the Refused stamp.
28-34 listed as Fem.
36 Occupation is "with his father #8."
