I, Harry Smith, Master of the Br SS Doric do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of San Francisco, is a full and perfect list of all Chinese passengers taken on board the said vessel at Hong Kong & Yokohama from which port said vessel has now arrived, or that have been taken on board the said vessel at any foreign port or place, and of all such passengers now on board said vessel, and that on said List is truly designated the names and other particulars, as shown by their respective certificates.So help me God. The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
Nov 30, 1896 is stamped in the sworn statement but 29th is written in above it. The cover sheet also says Nov 29.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1896 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case O'Leary, except as noted below).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
Occupation is entered only for Native steerage for San Francisco and for non-San Francisco passengers.
It is grocer for all these passengers except as noted below.

Champerico is on the Pacific coast of Guatemala. Bluefields is on the
Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. Demerara is in Guyana.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they have
some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
1-2 The manifest does not state why these passengers are separated from the others. Probably they were
the passengers in cabin class listed in the recapitulation. There is something written on the second line
that is obscured by the Landed stamp. Only the word manifest is legible. The inspector is Harrison for both
passengers.
3-5 Are described as "woman."
6-7 Occupation is Merchant.
6 The number of his bond was recorded as 5650, crossed out and replaced by 6050.
25 Second name is Hen or Ken.
28 First name looks like Linu but could be Lim with a large tail on the m.
32 Inspector is Harrison.
35 Last column might be native of US.
37 Occupation is "with cousin." Above this information Chii Yun ??d is written. The third name
could be Dad
41 Third name could be Sik, Lik or Cik.
71 Occupation is "with husband, Yow Choy."
76 Occupation is "with cousin Yow San."
78 Third name could be Fook.
83 Occupation is "with uncle Lee Hing."
99 Third name is Tick or Qick.
104 Age is 27 or 29.
118 Occupation is "with cousin Chan Quai."
121-122 The heading for these passengers and the recapitulation clearly state they are going by
rail, yet they are listed as departure by a steamer bound for Panama.
122 Occuaption is "to join her husband."
124 Second name looks like Ro but could be Po.
148 Third name is Qim or Tim. Occupation is "with cousin Lee Tong" (passenger #8)
149 Occupation is "with cousin Lee Tong" (passenger #8)
150 Occupation is "with brother Lee Tong" (passenger #8)
151 Occupation is "with cousin Lee Tong" (passenger #8)
