Transcriber's Notes:

* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.

Question marks replace illegible information or letters.

The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.

For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1897 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case O'Leary).

Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).

For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)

Occupation is Grocer except as noted below.

The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
 Height
 Complexion
 Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification

Salina Cruz is on the Pacific coast of Mexico. Punta Arenas is on the Strait of Magellan
in Chile, but there is a Puntarenas on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. San Benito is an
island off the coast of Baja Cailfornia in Mexico.

According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they have
some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.

 3 Inspector is Weller.
12 Occupation is "with uncle #16."
26 Occupation is "with cousin #46."
44-45 There was a piece of tape on the manifest that filmed black so there may be a third
name for both or either of these passengers.
44 Occupation is "with brother #96."
53-55 Occupation is "Woman."
67 Occupation is "with cousin #27."
75 The second name(s) has been written over by the original scribe so it is difficult to decipher'
It could be a single name Sickick.
84 Occupation is "woman & infant."
90 Occupation is "with father #52."
99 Occupation is "with father #84."
