Transcriber's Notes:

* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.

Question marks replace illegible information or letters.

The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.

For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1892 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case Grant).

Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).

For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)

The following columns had no entries:
 Height
 Complexion
 Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification

No of Certificate has been crossed out, replaced by Ticket No.
The Age column has been divided into two with the left hand portion called male and the
 right hand portion labeled female.
Occupation is Merchant for all San Francisco Passengers and Grocer for Panama and Havana
 passengers except as noted below.
Last Residence has no obvious entry for a number of passengers. It is possible that there
are ditto marks for these passengers indicating the same as the passenger above.

According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they
have some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.

1 Something is written under the Refused stamp in the Occupation column "wife of ?????."
There is a nearly illegible note "C??? Minister Passport ticket 45" at the end of the
entry. Probably this refers to passenger # 24 who has ticket # 45.
2,3 are joined by a bracket and the words "on one writ" which probably refers to the habeas
     corpus case number.
3 Occupation is "daughter."
13 has a note $250.
22,23 Occupation is "wife of merchant."
24 "on Chinese Minister's Passport, on same cert ticket 322." Ticket # 322 is passenger # 1.
25 Occupation is "wife of merchant."
26 "cash $400"
28 Occupation is Actor. "$400"
29 "cash $400"
30 Second name is Ngan or Ngau.
35 Occupation is Actor.
22,23,25,26,27,29,34 have a note in the margin "Fem."
42 Occupation is "with his uncle #4."
52 Occupation is "with his uncle #32."
