Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.
Question marks replace illegible information or letters.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1891 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case Grant).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
Occupation is Merchant for all San Francisco passengers except as noted below. It is Grocer
for all Panama and Havana passengers.
Last Residence is completed only for San Francisco passengers.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they have
some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
3 has scar on left wrist
7 There is a character after the third name that could be h, Hugh, a check mark, or 6.
19-21 The ages of these passengers are written in the months part of the Age column. It
probably is because they are female, rather than infants.
19-20 Occupation is "to join her husband."
21 Occupation is "with her aunt."
28 cert 983 preceeds this entry on its line.
43-45 The ages of these passengers are written in the months part of the Age column. It
probably is because they are female, rather than infants. Their
43-44 Occupations are "to join her husband."
55-58 After the Landed I.T. Transit Cert entry there is an illegible entry that is probably
the numbers of these certificates.
