Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.
Question marks replace illegible information or letters.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1891 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case Grant).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
were kept in Quarantine at Angel Island until the case was adjudicated. The National
Archives should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Occupation is illegible for passengers 1,2,5,6 & 29. It is Merchant for 8-27.
See notes below for remaining passengers.
Last Residence is illegible if there is a question mark and not entered if it is blank.
Blanks may actually be unseen ditto marks. See notes below.
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification had entries for
passengers one and two only. See notes below.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they
have some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
1 Mole on each forearm.
2 ? ? on right temple.
3 Occupation is Boy.
4 Occupation is probably Boy because there are 2 boys in the recapitulation but
the information might be ditto marks that are not legible.
6-7 are joined by a bracket a single USDC Case number and the words mother and child.
They both have Fem written in the margin.
7 Occupation is Girl.
28,30,31 have Fem written in the margin. Occuption is Woman.
