I, John J Atkin, Master of the S S Catalonia do solemnly, sincerely, and truly declare that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of Boston is a full and perfect List of all the passengers taken on board the said vessel at Liverpool and Queenstown from which port the said vessel has now arrived; and that on the said list are truly designated the age, sex, and calling of each of the said passengers, the location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the passage, the country of the citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that the said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of the said passengers who have died on the said voyage, and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; also, a true statement, so far as it can be ascertainead, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a protracted sojourn in this country. An asterisk (*) is used to refer to an item in the transcriber's notes, which
further explains the entry.
A question mark (?) is used for letter/letters that cannot be read because of the
quality of the document. Where possible a suggestion is given in the Transcriber's
Notes of what this letter/letters may be.
A circumflex (^) is used to indicate missing letters in a name. The original lister
showed this by writing the final letter smaller and raising it above the line.
The columns, "Date and Cause of Death" and "Transient, In Transient or intending
protracted sojourn" were elminited from this transcription as there were no deaths
on this passage and most of the passengers indicated a protracted sojourn. Those
listed as Transient were noted in the Transcriber's Notes for that Passenger number.
The "Location of compartment or space occupied" column was abbreviated by the
transcriber. Fore Steerage became "Fore Steer", Main Steerage became "Main Steer"
and Intermediate is abbreviate as "Inter".
The original lister numbered the passengers, but began the numbering at #1 again
for the Intermediate and Cabin passengers. This transcriber continued the
numbering consecutively for easier reference.
The original lister recorded the names as given name and then surname; the
transcriber has reversed this order for ease in alphabetizing and reference.
The original lister provided a recapitulation at the end of the document.
52 This passenger is listed as a female spinster, yet has a male name.
Could the name actually be Eugenie?
85 This wife is listed as a Fisherman by virtue of a ditto under the
husband's occupation.
101&102 Surname: Reere, Rure
103&104 Surname: Randle, Raudle
145 Surname: Tratter, Trattu
172 Surname possibilities: Blainqvist, Blaniqvist, Blanqvist
173 This passenger may be a relative of 224, Christina Chendqvist. Both
are going to the same place.
187-188 This surname appears to be Johunden, but could it possibly be
Johanden? Passenger 188 has a female name, but is listed as a male.
199 Surname: Wonberg, Winberg
210 Surname is probably Hansdatter abbreviated
220 Surname is listed as Joharson, but could it really be Johanson?
224 This passenger may be a relative of 173, Victor Chend. Both are going
to the same place.
235 It would appear that this child is a male.
245 There appears to be an error here. If the passenger above is the mother
of the child, she is listed as being in another compartment on the ship.
The child is listed as being a matron - one wonders if the lister missed
a passenger here, who was with the child in the same compartment.
246 This passenger, although listed as a female servant, has a male name.
Is the name really Johana Olsen?
254 Surname: This is listed as Klomaa, but one wonders if it should be
Kloman.
