SS Cincinnati

Affidavit of the Master or Commanding Officer or First or Second Officer I II Officer of the Cincinnati from Genova do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that I have caused the surgeon of said vessel sailing therewith or the surgeon employed by the owners thereof to make a physical and oral examination of each and all of the aliens named in the forgoing Lists or Manifest Sheets 29 in number, and that from the report of said surgeon and from my own investigation, I believe that no one of the said aliens is an idiot, or imbecile, or a feeble minded person, or insane person, or a pauper, or is likely to become a public charge, or is afflicted with tuberculosis, or with a loathsome or dangerous contagious disease, or is a person who has been convicted of or who admits having committed a felony or other crime or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude or is a polygamist or one admitting belief in the practice of polygamy or an anarchist, or under promise or agreement express or implied to perform labor in the United States, or a prostitute, or a woman or girl coming to the united states for the purpose of prostitution, or for any other immoral purpose, and that also, according to the best of my knowledge and belief, the information in the said List or Manifests concerning each of said aliens named therin is correct and true in every respect. Zeaulieu, Surgeon of the SS Cincinnati sailing therewith, do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that I have had 12 years' experience as a Physician and Surgeon, and that I am entitled to practice as such by and under the authority of the Yenusen Geouvineuh and that I have made a personal examination of each of the aliens named hereto, and that the forgoing Lists or Manifest Sheets 2 in number, are, according to the best of my knowledge and belief, full, correct, and true in all particulars relative to the mental and physical condition of such aliens. Sworn to before me this 17th day of April, 1913 at New York. Signed, unreadable, Immigration Officer.

  This Manifest indicates the ship left Genova on 2 April, Naples on 3 April, and Palermo on
  4 April.  Page number 34 is stamped on the top of the given name column.  Stamped on the
  bottom of the same column is the number 34. This is not always the case, often the top 
  number is one lower than the bottom.

  When all pages of this manuscript have been transcribed and put on line, there will be three
  extra lists added to the end, to include US Citizens, Detained Aliens, and Aliens Held for
  Special Inquiry.
  Recorders often used the word do or ditto for able to read, as most here are for columns from
  nationality, race and country of origin. These are from the first line Passenger 559. Many
  passengers also have dittos in columns of occupation, passenger and nearest relative
  residences, and destinations. This transcriber replaced all dittos with the information
  referred to. Gender was written as m for male, all passengers on this page are male, all but
  one are laborers, and all but two passengers this page are from the north. Marital status is
  written M or m for married and S or s for single. Transcriber uses the full word. In this
  manuscript the Occupation, Labourer is the British spelling for Laborer. This page has no
  surnames written for any relative of passengers, nor were maiden names of wives or mothers
  given. It was the custom of Italian women to use in that era, and was written on other pages
  in this manuscript. Writing on this page is small, sometimes hard to read.

  Passenger 569 is lined out. This usually means that this passenger was not on this ship. They
  do not have a check before their surnames, between age and gender, or Final Destination as all
  other passengers do.  Sometimes this information may be written in and is readable, sometimes
  the columns may have ditto marks or maybe blank.  Of the 30 passengers on this page, 29 made
  this passage, on the bottom of the page 29 is written.

  a word ?ome is written for several passengers on this page, where name of nearest relative
  is usually written.  The first letters look to be Fl or Tl. Above the second letter, o is a
  circumflex mark, looks like the tip of an arrow pointed upward. Neither Flome or Tlome are
  to be found in the Italian dictionary.

  The Italian language has no letter h, j, k, w, x, or y.
  The letter h is only used with ch or gh.

559 Cussigh, destination was first written as S Jose, the letters, an, are written at an angle
    after the S and above the word Jose.
561 Michele, the name given for the wife of this passenger maybe her given or maiden name,
    married surname, or both, as it is written on the line used for the name of a relative. It
    was usually the custom of Italian women to use their maiden name during that era. It is most
    unusual for the city of a relative to be different from passengers, so this maybe the given
    or maiden name or married surname of the wife, but it is on the line usually used for the
    address or town of a relative. The end of the word is unclear and may be the town, Rossino,
    as is written for several other passengers on this page.
562 Tellatin, the first letter of surname, T, was written over by another hand, the first is
    clearly a T, the second is not, but transcriber can not make out what that letter is.
    Surname of mother is not given. It was the custom of Italian women to use their maiden name
    during that era.
563 Meneghetti, a word, ?ome, is on line where the relationship of nearest relative is usually
    written. First letters look to be Fl, Tl or an H. Above the second letter, o, is a

569 Guidi, passenger is crossed out by a thick line. This usually means they did not board this
    ship. Some is hard to read, covered by the line, except for what is stated. Occupation has
    a vertical line through it. Race is given as South, and Last address maybe Lucca. Maybe an
    error by the recorder, as Lucca is in the north. Destination, city may begin with T or an I,
    looks like Tonie, closest found, Tunis and Ionia.
570 Montale, t in the surname looks like it was crossed again by another hand, to clarify it.
    Last address looks like Mecerata, but maybe Macesata, closest found is Macerata, a provence
    in Italy. On line of nearest relative, a word, ?ome is where the relationship is usually
    written. First letters looks like Fl, Tl or an H. Above the second letter, o, is a
    circumflex mark, which looks like the tip of an arrow pointed upward. Neither Flome nor
    Tlome was found in the Italian dictionary. This word is repeated for several passengers on

571 Bergami, city of final destination, letters are unclear, looks like Veatsque, closest found
    is Weatogue.  Passengers 580 and 586 are also headed there, but the writing of those is a
    little clearer.
572 Bucchi, age is not clear, second digit looks like a 2 or 3 and an j, but maybe a 5.
575 Cassini, age is not clear, second digit looks like a 2, 3, 9, or an S, but maybe a 5.
577 Berloni, letters of given name of father maybe either Getulio or Gebulio, no name similar
    found.
579 S?ua??i, surname letters are unclear, maybe Sguarri, Sguazzi, Squarri, or Squazzi. Numbers
    are over columns from occupation and able to read and write, looks like a 1 a horizontal
    dash a V or an 8, 2302. If it is a V, it indicates a verification of landing, a record
    check, which maybe for a declaration of intention or Petition for Naturalization.
580 Pasquini, surname looks as stated, but maybe Pasguini. Letters and numbers are written
    from surname to nationality column. These sets of numbers may have to do with several
    verification checks, generally in response to an application for citizenship or
    naturalization. Over surname and given name are numbers NAT 390 dash C dash, and the rest
    is somewhat covered by letters of passengers, above and below. It looks like 4052910, but
    maybe 4052210. Just after the given name, are three numbers, one below the other. The first
    maybe a 20, but looks more like a v type of check then maybe a 6. Under that is either 1428
    or 428, the 1 may be just a mark on the copy. Under that is a line, and then 991. In the
    column between age and gender, usually reserved for the months of age, is an a, within a
    circle. Transcriber does not know what that stands for. Next is unclear, looks to be an a,
    I, or W, a diagonal slash then a W, or IN. This transcriber has not seen these previous
    numbers and letters before. There is a dash before a set of numbers in the Occupation to
    Nationality column, which are a verification for naturalization purposes, usually done
    after 1926. The first number is either an application number or the Certificate of Arrival
    number. These numbers are 55983 a diagonal line 913, then a dash and like a date 9, a
    diagonal dash 20, a diagonal dash and 38. Transcriber does not know what 913 is for, but
    the last set of numbers may be the year and date the person applied. Destination state and
    city are written as do or ditto from 572, then written over. Letters are light and unclear,
    Conn, and maybe Wotoque, closest found is Weatogue. Passengers 571 and 586 are also headed
    there, but the writing is a little clearer for this passenger.
581 Gervasi, numbers are written in gender to occupation column, 1 dash 100469. These numbers
    are a verification for naturalization purposes, usually done after 1926. The first number
    is a naturalization district number, the second set is either an application number or the
    Certificate of Arrival number. There is no date shown when this was done. Destination state
    and city are written as do or ditto from 572, then passenger above has state and city
    written over, looks like Wotoque, closest found is Weatogue.
582 Ba???iocchi, surname letters unclear, looks like Bacchiocchi but maybe Bauhiocchi. Over
    occupation to Nationality columns numbers are written, 1 dash 283507 dash, and like a
    date 2 a diagonal line, 29 a diagonal line, 40. These numbers are a verification for
    naturalization purposes, usually done after 1926. The first number is a naturalization
    district number, the second set is either an application number or the Certificate of
    Arrival number. The last set of numbers maybe the year and date the person applied.
    Destination letters are unclear, looks like Bestaini, or maybe Britain, definitely not
    New Britain as for other passengers on this page.
583 Alessi, destination, looks like destination of New Britain was written over, but is light
    and unclear, looks like an M, or may be a W, but the rest of the word is too light to make
    out.
584 Angelini, age is not clear, looks like a 2 or 3 and a j, maybe a 5. Destination state and
    city are written as do or ditto from 581, which was then written over. This passenger also
    had city written over, but is too light to make out.
585 Giacomoni, destination, state and city are written as do or ditto from 583 and 584, but
    each city was written over, but is too light to make out.
586 Rondini, given name of father looks like Aldebrando, no similar name found, definitely is
    not Alessandro.
587 Rondini, Given name looks like Tvo, no name similar found, maybe a nickname or an
    abbreviation.  Lightly written across given names from below this passenger to passenger
    577, are two words.  Unable to read all but a few of the last letters of the first word,
    which looks like ldo, second word is too light. Written over Race columns of both 587 and
    588 is something that looks more like several lumps than letters or a word, possibly the
    initials of the inspector, but is too light to read. Given name of father looks like
    Aldebrando, no similar name found, definitely is not Alessandro.
588 Piesanti, lightly written across given names from below this passenger to passenger 577, are
    two words. Unable to read all but a few of the last letters of the first word, which looks
    like ldo, second word is too light.  Numbers are written from gender to able to read and
    write columns, but writing from below obscures one number. These are 1 dash, then what looks
    like 178859 or 170859, dash, and like a date 4, a diagonal dash 17, a diagonal dash, 36.
    These numbers are a verification for naturalization purposes, usually done after 1926. The
    first number is a naturalization district number, the second set is either an application
    number or the Certificate of Arrival number. Last set of numbers maybe the year and date the
    person applied. Written over Race columns of both 587 and 588 is something that looks more
    like several lumps than letters or a word, possibly the initials of the inspector, but is
    too light to read.
