* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not
the transcriber, or is used to call your attention to additional information
in the transcriber's notes.
? A question mark (?) denotes letter or letters which could not be read because of the
quality of the document. Ordinarily, an attempt is made to allow one question mark for
each missing letter and to attempt to describe what these letters may be; however,
because of the poor condition of this document that is rarely possible. Hence, there
may be more or fewer letters missing in the name.
As previously stated, the condition of this document is very poor; it appears that it
was water-damaged and some of the ink was washed away or lightened. The transcribers
have used extensive notes to give alternate possibilities for the name, but at times
this is just not possible.
The original lister recorded everyone with an occupation even when it was not
appropriate or possible. For instance, even infants are recorded as labourers.
The original lister did not number the list; this was done by the transcribers.
The first person in a group is the one to whom the lister attributed the luggage; so
this gives some clue as to the persons traveling together.
There was no declaration statement at the front of this document and thus we do not
know the name of the captain. At the end, something is written, but it is almost
impossible to read - if we had to guess, we would say that the captain's name is
J. M. Quinn, but it is a guess.
