I, Henry Tibbits, Master of the Br Ste C of Washington, do
solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest,
subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of
the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the
Passengers taken on board the said SS City of Washington at Liverpool, from
which Port the said City of Washington has now arrived; and that on said List
is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said
passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the
country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by
each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth
the number of said Passengers who have died on said Voyage and the names and
ages of those who died.

Transcriber's Notes:
A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be transcribed
definitely.
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the
manifest or something in the Transcriber Notes to which the reader should refer.
A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted.
The transcriber numbers all the passengers consecutively 1 through 434, but the
recorder of the original manifest numbered the 1st Cabin passengers 1 through 28,
and the Steerage passengers 1 through 406.
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates given names by writing the first few
letters of the name, then skipping letters and then writing the final letter as
superscripted. In these cases, the transcriber uses the symbol (^) to indicate that
the following letter is superscripted, i.e., Tho^s for Thomas, R^d for Richard,
W^m for William, etc. Othertimes, the recorder abbreviates names by writing the
first few letters, skipping letters and then adding the final letter of the name,
i.e., Patk for Patrick, Mgt or Margt for Margaret, "Saml" for Samuel, etc., or he
uses an abbreviated version of their given name, such as "Hy" for Henry, "Ml"
for Michael, "Dl" for Daniel, "My" for Mary, "Jno" for John, "Geo" for George and
"Jas" for James.
The recorder routinely substitutes "Mc" for "Mac" in the surnames of the Irish
passengers.
218 Given name appears to be either "Han" or "Hon", perhaps the recorder's
abbreviation for either "Hannah" or "Honora", respectively.
244 Surname is recorded as "Kellether", but might actually be "Kelleher".
254 Surname is recorded as "Heaver", but might possibly be "Heaven" or "Heaner".
262 Given name appears to be "Manr" or "Mam".
270 Surname is recorded as "Sheehey", but might actually be spelled "Sheehy".
272 Passenger has a feminine given name and her Sex is listed as "Female", yet
her Occupation is recorded as "Laborer", probably a recording error. She
is likely the "Wife" of passenger number 271.
282-284 Surname appears to be written as "Beckley", but might possibly be
"Berkley" or "Buckley".
285 This passenger has a feminine given name, "Brgt" for Bridget, yet her Sex is
listed as "Male" and with an Occupation of "Laborer", probably a recording
error.
294 Surname is either "Hallahan" or "Hullahan".
315 Passenger has the feminine given name "Ann", yet is listed as "Male",
likely a recording error.
323 Passengers less than 12 years old are usually listed as "Child", yet this
passenger is 7 years old and listed as "Spinster".
327 Passenger has a masculine given name, "Ml" for Michael, and is listed as a
"Lab" for Laborer, yet his Sex is recorded as "Female", likely a recording
error.
340 Surname is recorded as "Brien", but might possibly be "O'Brien", the same
as passengers numbers 336, 337 and 338 above.
343 Surname is possibly "Mornsly", "Moursly" or "Momsly".
344 Passenger's Sex and Occupation are not recorded though "Ml" for Michael is
clearly a masculine given name and all the other adult male Irish
passengers are have the Occupation of "Lab" for Laborer.
356 Passenger has the feminine given name "Harriett", yet her Sex is listed as
"M" and her Occupation listed as "Lab" for Laborer, likely a recording
error. She is more likely the "Wife" of passenger number 355.
358 Surname is recorded as "Cowig", but might actually be spelled "Cowhig".
360 Given name begins with "M" followed by two or three letters too poorly
formed to decipher, but might possibly be "Manr" or "Mam". Surname is
recorded as "Morrisey", but might actually be spelled "Morrissey".
367 Passenger is listed as Age 8, too young for the recorded Occupation of
"Lab" or laborer, likely a recording error. Either his Age is recorded
incorrectly, or he should have the Occupation of "Child".
374 Passenger's Sex and Occupation are not recorded, but from the feminine
given name the Sex is likely "F" and because she is traveling with a child
her Occupation is likely "Wife".
379 Surname is recorded as "Levine", but might possibly be "Lavin".
382-388 Surname is recorded as "Lorigan", but might actually be spelled
"Lorrigan".
399 Surname begins with "W" followed by several poorly formed letters that
cannot be deciphered with certianty but might possibly be "ndon", "wdon",
"ndor" or "wdor". Srname is possibly "Endon", "Endor", "Ewdon" or "Ewdor".
400 Surname appears to be Eva", "Even" or "Ever".
402 Surname is either "Prout" or "Pront".
420 Surname is possibly "Ovterbudp", "Outerbudp", "Outerbudge", "Outerbridge",
or "Outerbirdge".
432 Surname is either "Keefler" or "Kufler".
