I, Henry Tibbits, Master of the Br Ste C of Washington, do
solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest,
subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of
the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the
Passengers taken on board the said SS City of Washington at Liverpool, from
which Port the said City of Washington has now arrived; and that on said List
is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said
passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the
country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by
each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth
the number of said Passengers who have died on said Voyage and the names and
ages of those who died.

Transcriber's Notes:
A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be transcribed
definitely.
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the
manifest or something in the Transcriber Notes to which the reader should refer.
A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted.
The transcriber numbers all the passengers consecutively 1 through 434, but the
recorder of the original manifest numbered the 1st Cabin passengers 1 through 28,
and the Steerage passengers 1 through 406.
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates given names by writing the first few
letters of the name, then skipping letters and then writing the final letter as
superscripted. In these cases, the transcriber uses the symbol (^) to indicate that
the following letter is superscripted, i.e., Tho^s for Thomas, R^d for Richard,
W^m for William, etc. Othertimes, the recorder abbreviates names by writing the
first few letters, skipping letters and then adding the final letter of the name,
i.e., Patk for Patrick, Mgt or Margt for Margaret, "Saml" for Samuel, etc., or he
uses an abbreviated version of their given name, such as "Hy" for Henry, "Ml"
for Michael, "Dl" for Daniel, "My" for Mary, "Jno" for John, "Geo" for George and
"Jas" for James.
The recorder routinely substitutes "Mc" for "Mac" in the surnames of the Irish
passengers.

3 Surname appears to be either "Haslon" or "Haslow".
28 Letters of surname are not clearly formed, Surname might be "Fox" or "Ford".
32 Surname appears to be either "Hankin" or "Harkin".

be "Schultz".
41 Surname appears to be written as "Rath", but might actually be "Roth".
52 Passenger's name is either "D C Davis" or "Dl Davis".

120 Surname appears to be either "Duhl" or "Diehl".
123 First letter of surname is unclear. Surname is possibly "Juckland",
Tuckland" or "Yuckland".
127 Surname is either "Schess" or "Schiss".
128 Surname is possibly "Joherbusler", Joberbusler", "Joherbutler" or "Joberbutler".
136 No entry is recorded for passenger's Occupation.
138 Given name is recorded as "Frilz", but might possibly be "Fritz". Surname
appears to be either "Etzmuller" ort "Etizmuller".
139-141 Surname is possibly "Grannoh", "Grannow" or "Grannon".
144 Surname is either "Strumpf" or "Stumpf".
146 Surname is possibly "Messov" or "Messer". There is a note recorded for this
passenger which states: "Missing. Supposed to have gone Overboard".
149-150 Given name appears to be written as "Gior", "Geor", "Geov" or "Giov".
152 Surname is either "Unshelm" or "Anshelm".
158 Given name begins with "T" followed by two letters too poorly formed to decipher
with certainty, but name is possibly "Tim".
160 Surname appears to be either "Harney" or "Hainey".
167 Surname is possibly "Muhanson" or "Mirhanson".
169 Surname is possibly "Seidenbesku", "Seidenbeski", "Seidenbesken", "Serdentesku"
or some similar name.
