2 May 1868

DISTRICT OF NEW YORK - PORT OF NEW YORK
I, James Donaldson, Master of the Steamship "United Kingdom", do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said S.S. So help me God. (Signature) James Donaldson.

Transcriber's Notes:

A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that cannot be transcribed
  definitely.

An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of
the manifest or something in the Transcriber's Notes to which the reader
  should refer.

A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is
  superscripted.

The transcriber numbers the passengers consecutively, even though they are not
  numbered in the original manifest.

The entry "United States" in the native country and destination country columns
is shortened to "U. States" for formatting reasons. "Male" and "Female" in the
Sex column is shortened to "M" and "F" for the same reason.

The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates given names by writing the first
few letters of the name. Other times he abbreviates given names by writing the
first few letters of the name, then skipping letters and then writing the final
letter as superscripted. In these cases, the transcriber uses the symbol (^) to
indicate that the following letter is superscripted, i.e., M^l or Mich^l for
Michael, Alex^r for Alexander, Sam^l for Samuel, W^m for William, etc.
The recorder also uses abbreviations for some common given names, e.g., Chas for
Charles, Jas for James, Jno for John, Hy for Henry, etc.

The recorder often lists the Occupations of women, children and even infants as
Miners, Farmers, or Servants. He is too consistent in this practice for it to be
inadvertent. Perhaps he ascribes the Occupation of head-of-family to all members
  of the traveling family.

        or "McDonnell".
61 Surname appears to be written as "Mamock", but might possibly be "Hancock".
66 Surname appears to be written as "Noshart" or "Washart", but might possibly
     be "Hoshart".

     or "Ward".
103 Surname is recorded as "Gallacher", but might possibly be "Gallagher".

135 Surname is possibly "Nevin" or "Nixon" or similar name.
138 Surname appears to be written as "Glinnen", but might possibly be "Glennon".
139 Passenger's Age is either 16 or 18.
156 Last letters of surname are completely undeciphereable.
157-160 These passengers are children and all are listed as "Spinster", clearly
     a recording error.
