A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted.

The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates given names by writing the first
few letters of the name, then skipping letters and then writing the final letter
as superscripted. In these cases, the transcribers use the symbol (^) to indicate
that the following letter was superscripted, i.e., Rich^d for Richard, "Eliz^th"
for Elizabeth, "Tho^s" for Thomas, etc.
