DISTRICT OF NEW YORK - PORT OF NEW YORK
I. R Albers, Master of the (blank) do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York is a full and perfect list of all the Passengers taken on board of the said S S Rugia at Hamburg from which port said S S Rugia has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the location of the compartments or spaces of the said vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country of citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each, and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage and the dates, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each, also a true statement so far as can be ascertained with reference to the intentions of each alien passenger, as to a protracted sojourn in the country. So help me God.

Location on Ship column, passengers #34-42, #54-59, #95-102, #152-162, #207-211,
 #226-228,and #282 were unreadable due to hole in manifest. Some showed a ditto mark,
 but it was not known what area that indicated.
In Transit/Transient column, passengers #39-47 and #53-105 were unreadable due to hole
 in manifest.
Many first names are abbreviated by the manifest writer.  Try Friedrich for Fried;
 Wilhelm for Wilh; Wilhelmina for Wilh^e; Johann for Joh; Johanne for Joh^e; August
 for Aust; Catherine for Cath^e; Heinrich for Hein; Reinhart for Rein; and so on. 
Some location names are abbreviated by the manifest writer.  Try Mecklenburg for
 Mecklbrg; Wurttemburg for Wrtburg; Bavary is probably Bavaria.


      3  First letter is clearly written, but not like others, possibly a Gothic S.
      7  In death column, "died of Ha??ia ??thesis May 9". Missing letters are too
         faint in some places and too thick in others.
     12  In death column, "died of Pe???sis May 4". Missing letters are too faint. 
     18  First letter or two of occupation is blurred, but possibly S; then phel;
         then torn area.
     19  Occupation is blurred, but possibly begins 'brin'; then torn area.
     33  Occupation is hard to read.  Unknown first letter, then possibly 'dr',
         'tt' or 'tr', followed by a letter that drops below line (y?), then 'ater'.  
     36  Written at beginning of dark area.  First name appears to begin with a G or D.
 37- 42  All missing information in this area is because of torn spots on the original
         manifest.
     42  First name missing letter is dark, possibly an 'l'.
     51  Occupation is tightly written, begins with 'bookk'; then two midline letters,
         followed by a letter that goes up (possibly l), ending 'er'; looks like
         Bookkeder or Bookaler. 
     52  Occupation appears to say Warddy.
 54- 57  Missing letters and words are in torn area.
     58  Surname is too dark to read.
     60  First name begins with 'C', then a curved letter that looks like a small c,
         then an upward stroke with a small hump at the end like an 'h', followed by 'il'.
     61  First name is possibly ??eust, with an umlaut over the e; or ??uist. 
     82  First name appears to be Jisnuth or Fisnuth.
     88  Surname has umlaut.
     92  First name appears to be clear, so probably an abbreviation.  Surname missing
         letters are midline.
     93  Surname missing letters are midline.
     94  The first name appears to begin with S, G or H; the other missing letter is
         probably h or t.  This name is too dark to read very well.
 95- 98  These names are too dark to read well and there are tears.
 99-102  The surname appears to be Poshalzoty, but is too dark to be sure.
    103  The missing letter in the first name is a tall letter.
104-105  The occupation is the same for both and though smeared, appears to be Doctor
         or Pastor. 
    112  First name is Ja, followed by two midline letters that look like 'un', and
         ending with 'b' or 't'.
    125  The first letter is followed by a midline letter, then 's', and ending with
         a midline letter and 't'.
126-128  Occupation begins with a rounded letter, a midline letter, and ends 'aler'.
135-136  First letter of surname is F; then a midline letter, possibly a 'u'; followed
         by a tall letter, possibly an 'l'; then a midline letter; ending with 'man'.
    137  The last three letters of the first name are a tall letter, followed by two
         midline letters.  The occupation is 'sa', then a letter that hangs below line,
         a blank space of about 2 letters due to faintness, a tall letter, and ending
         with 'er'. 
    143  Surname is G, followed by probably 3 midline up and down letters, ending with
         'k'; possibly Gnenk or Gunek.
    146  Age is faint, probably 6 months or 10 months.
152-154  Missing letters of names are due to a tear in the manuscript.
161-162  Country is either Onbeck or Anbeck.
    165  Missing surname letter is midline; possibly Sanacberg.
    170  Missing letters of surname is due to being covered by the name and crossing
         out of the name above it.  Occupation is unreadable, but begins with 'm'.
171-172  Missing letters of surname is due to being covered by the name and crossing
         out of the name above it. 
    175  First number of age is too cramped to read.
    185  Though crossed out, I can see a first name with Fried and the occupation of
         shoemaker.
    188  The surname begins with a K, then about three midline letters and ends with er.
191-195  Surname possibly could be Toyke.
196-201  First letter is difficult to read, possibly Pattefun, Sattefun, Cattefun.
    193  Age is 28 or 38.
    195  Last letter of first name is a midline letter, possibly 'x'. Age is faint,
         possibly 4 or 11.
    215  First name has two or three midline letters that are unreadable. 
    217  First name begins at the top with a horizontal move from the left to drop
         straight down and then move sharply at the bottom to the left; then two midline
         letters, the first up and down like a 'n' or 'm', and the second rounded like
         an 'a' or 'o'; ending with a 't'.
    218  The second number of the age is blurred, a rounded number.
    226  Surname has tear after the first letter.
    239  The occupation was written over and is hard to read, possibly workm.
245-248  Surname has umlaut.
    261  All missing letters in first name are midline; could possibly be Leonard.
    272  First name is too faint, but after 'Th' the missing letters are one or two
         midline letters, followed by an upswing letter, followed by another one or
         two midline letters, and ending with 'e'. Could possibly be Theodore, but the
         middle letter looks more like a 'b' or 't'.
    275  First name is too faint to read.
276-277  Most of first name is too faint to read.
281-282  The names are mostly so faint they appear just as scratches.  
283-288  The names are mostly so faint they appear just as scratches. The surname is the
         same for each of these (ditto marks).
289-290  The missing letters are so faint they appear just as scratches.  
291-294  The names are mostly so faint they appear just as scratches.  The surnames are
         the same.  The occupations are unreadable for #293 and #294.
295-299  The unreadable names are so faint they appear mostly as scratches.
    300  The name is so faint it appears just as scratches, but I think the first name
         possibly could be Isaac.  The occupation is also too faint.
