SS Rapidan


New Orleans, Louisiana and Havana, Cuba to New York
22 April 1868

DISTRICT OF NEW YORK - PORT OF NEW YORK
I, W^m S. Cheeseman, Master of the Steamship "Rapidan", do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said Steamship Rapidan at New Orleans and Havana, from which Ports the said Steamship Rapidan has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said Voyage and the names and ages of those who died.

List or Manifest of ALL THE PASSENGERS taken on board the Steamship "Rapidan" whereof W^m S. Cheeseman is Master, from New Orleans and Havana, burthen 868 tons.
Columns represent: given name and surname, age, sex, occupation, the country to which they severally belong, the country in which they intend to become inhabitants, and the part of the vessel occupied during the voyage. Since no one died during the voyage, this column is omitted in the transcription.

 Transcriber's Notes:

  A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be transcribed 
  definitely.

  An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the 
  manifest or something in the Transcriber's Notes to which the reader should refer.

  A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted.

  In the Captain's sworn statement at the top of the manifest, the Captain's 
  name is written as "Cheeseman".  However, in the his signature, the Captain's 
  name appears to be written as "Cheesman".


  1  Letters of surname are not carefully formed and cannot be deciphered with
     certainty, but surname is possibly "Trisbo", "Trixbo", "Trisba", "Trixba".
  2  Letters of surname are not carefully formed and cannot be deciphered with
     certainty, but surname is possibly "Milass", "Milaso", "Milan" or "Milard".
  3  There is an acute accent mark above the "e" in given name "Jose".
  8  Surname is either "Lakeman" or "Lokeman".
 14  Surname is possibly "Maranio", "Matanio" or "Masanio".
