SS Pennsylvania
I, William Hall, Master of the S.S. "Pennsylvania", do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said S.S. "Pennsylvania" at Liverpool and Q'town, from which Ports the said S.S. "Pennsylvania" has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said Voyage and the names and ages of those who died. An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the
manifest or something in the Transcriber's Notes to which the reader should refer.
A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted.
The recorder of the manifest sometimes abbreviates given names by writing the
first few letters of the name, then skipping letters and then writing the final
letter as superscripted. In these cases, the transcribers use the symbol (^) to
indicate that the following letter was superscripted, i.e., Bern^d for Bernard,
Cath^e for Catherine, Marg^t for Margaret, Mich^l for Michael, etc.
The Occupation of every adult male in steerage class is listed as "Laborer". While
no doubt many passengers were Labourers, it challenges the imagination to believe
that not one of these more than 600 steerage passengers is a "Farmer", "Clerk",
"Miner" or other occupation common to immigrants. Therefore, the recorded passenger
Occupations should be viewed with some skepticism.
14 Passenger has the feminine given name "Mary" and Sex is recorded as "Female", yet
Occupation is listed as "Labourer", possibly a recording error.
43 Surname appears to be written as "Allorde", but might possibly be "Allord".
44 Pasenger's Age is either 33 or 35.
56 Surname is either "Koden" or "Hoden".
66 Surname is recorded as "Finegan", but might possibly be "Finnegan".

Passenger # 305, Lewis Haysmer, was born 19 March 1826 in Staplehurst,
Kent, England, and died 26 February 1896 in Bushnell Twp., Montcalm Co.,
Michigan. He married Caroline Susanna George about 1845 in England.
According to the cemetery marker for Lewis in Mabie Sunny Hill Cemetery
in Bushnell Twp., his wife was born in 1829 and died on 14 May 1866.
However, she is not buried there. The obituary of her daughter, Mary,
indicates her mother died 2 years before they moved to America. The
father with 5 children (passengers #306-#310) William, 21, Edward, 19,
Mary J., 11, Caroline, 9, and Elizabeth, 6, came to America and settled
in Bushnell Twp. In the 1851 British census, Lewis, Caroline, and
Edward are listed as residents of the village of Staplehurst, where
Lewis was an agricultural laborer. Also living with them was William
James (Fuller/George) who was 4 years old and listed as step-son (he
was apparently passenger #306 and the "5th" child who came to America
with his father/stepfather), which raises the question of whether
Caroline's maiden name was George or Fuller. During the 1870 census of
Bushnell Twp. Lewis and his 2 youngest daughters were living with Lewis's
sister, Ann Haysmer Edwards. In the 1880 census Lewis was living with a
housekeeper named Mary Bumley and her 3 sons (George, Joseph and Alfred
- age 12 and born in England). In the 1894 census of Bushnell Twp. Lewis
was living with his daughter, Mary. Lewis made his will shortly before he
died and he named his daughters as heirs. Tom Adams
