This list from the National Archives and Records Administration (Microfilm 237/899) has
been compared to a list found in a monograph which can be found in the Ostfriesen
Genealogical Society of America library at Forest Lake MN. The monograph is titled
"From Bremen to America in 1850: Fourteen Rare Emigrant Ship Lists" by Clifford Neal
Smith, Monograph No. 22 in the German-American Genealogical Research Series
(ISSN 0094-7806), published by Westland Publications, McNeal, Arizona, 1987.
In the preface to the monograph, Mr. Smith states that the information comes from
an . . . obscure weekly newspaper from Rudolstadt, Thuringia (Germany)entitled the
"Allgemeine Auswanderungs-Zeitung," devoted to news about ship sailings ...
The newspaper can be found in the Beinecke Rare Book Collection of the Yale University
Library. Discrepancies between the NARA list and the monograph list are mentioned in
the Passenger Notes. I cannot explain why some names included in the monograph
are not on the NARA passenger list or why some on the NARA list are not on the
monograph list. I can only conjecture that people whose names appear on the German list
may have decided not to emigrate, and people whose names appear on the NARA ship list may
have been last minute passengers in Germany.
The monograph states that the ship left Bremen on 22 June 1850.
1-2 Monograph lists the name as Zoebisch, indicating an umlaut over the
"o" of Zoebisch. Occupation designation also has an umlauted "u."
5 Monograph lists surname as Wiete.
6 Surname has an umlauted "u" thus may be Mueller.
7 Occupation has an umlauted "u" thus may be Mueller.

36 Monograph lists name as J. G. Muff.
37 Monograph lists name as Solmar Rottner.
41-43 Surname may be either Bakmann or Barmann.
44-48 Surname looks like it could be Reye or Reije--there are two dots, either
over the "y" which is common in German handwriting or the dots are for
the "i" and the "j."

49-52 Listed in monograph as travelling together.

Correspondence added 9-30-2005, passenger BUCHNER
I am almost certain that Jacob Buchner who was on the Bark Orion that landed in America
on 16 Aug 1850 is my Great-Great Grandfather. I have traced his family and am still
working on it. You can see my work at my homepage.
Click on "Click here to see family history" when you get the main page.
From there look up Jacob Beachner, Sr. And you can see as much of the family that I
have put together. They changed their name to Beachner after they got to the U.S.
I am currently ordering a death certificate on this Jacob Beachner and his son George
Beachner (who was also on this ship).
