I, Henry Davis Cutting, Master of the S.S. "Helvetia", do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said SS "Helvetia" at Liverpool and Queenstown, from which Ports the said Vessel has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said Voyage and the names and ages of those who died.

The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates given names by writing the first few
letters of the name, then skipping letters and then writing the final letter as
superscripted. In these cases, the transcriber uses the symbol (^) to indicate that
the following letter is superscripted, i.e., Tho^s for Thomas, Sam^l for Samuel,
Cath^n for Catherine, W^m for William, etc.

If a passenger preferred not to disclose his/her Age, the recorder includes either
an "a" or "c" in the Age column indicating "Adult" or "Child", respectively.

The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates a passenger's Occupation, such as
"Merch^t" for "Merchant", "Lab^r" for Laborer, "Serv^t for Servant and "Inft" for
Infant.

The entry "United States" in the native country and destination country columns
is shortened to "U. States" for formatting reasons.

The Orlop deck is the lowest deck of a ship having at least four decks.

616-617 Native country is recorded as "Italy", yet names are distinctly German,
possibly a recording error.
621 Passenger has the feminine given name "Julia", yet Sex is recorded as "Male"
with Occupation "Lab^r", possibly a recording error.
639 Surname is either "Suhr" or "Surp".
685 Surname is recorded as "McTurnen", but might possibly be "McTernan"
or "McTiernan".
686 Surname is recorded as "Taggert", but might possibly be "Taggart".
693 Surname is recorded as "McLutchon", but might possibly be "McCutcheon".
783 Surname is recorded as "Burne", but might possibly be "Byrne".
835 Surname is either "Person" or "Peison".
837 Surname is recorded as "Morrissy", but might possibly be "Morrissey".
839 Surname is either "Garnsslen" or "Gaensslen".
853 Surname is recorded as "Donagan", but might possibly be "Donegan".
854 Surname is recorded as "Morrissy", but might possibly be "Morrissey".
855 Surname is recorded as "Gafney", but might possibly be "Gaffney".
893 Surname is recorded as "Dooly", but might possibly be "Dooley".
895 Surname is recorded as "Howergin", but might possibly be "Hourigan".
