Brig Gertrude
I, A. Heyen, Master of the Brig Gertrude do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said Brig at Emden from which port said Brig has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become and inhabitant; and that said List of Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage and the names and ages of those who died.
Sworn to this 21 June 1856 A Heyen
Before me (signature of port official indecipherable)
List or Manifest of all the Passengers taken on board the Brig Gertrude whereof A. Heyen is Master, from Emden burthen -- tons.
Transcriber's comments:
This list has been augmented by information from Hilda Bruns, Campen, Germany, (Genealogical Researcher) who has provided the village/town of origin which I have included in the list (whereas the NARA microfilm list only listed most of the passengers as originating in Germany). Further explanatory notes, thanks to Mrs. Bruns, are found in the transcriber's and passengers's notes at the end of the list. Family groups are listed usually with the father first, then the mother--usually under her maiden name--and then the children.

Transcriber's Notes: * An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not the transcriber, or is used to call your attention to additional information in the transcriber's notes. ? Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the condition of the manifest or handwriting of the original recorder. I believe the names of the women are their maiden names because the male/head of the household is usually listed first and then a female name and then the children with surnames the same as the father's. The list has been renumbered to conform with ISTG editorial guidelines. 2 The last name is spelled with o Umlaut to read Roetgers. 3 First name is abbreviated; however it may be Wulb i.e. Wulbrand. 4 Full name: Harm Tonjes Homerssen/Hummers--married Eiltje Martens Gastmann in Campen in 1851. Tonjes has an umlaut o. 5 Gender should be female--full name: Eiltje Martens Gastmann, wife of Harm T. Hummers. She was born in 1821 in Campen. 6-7 Twin daughters born in 1851 in Campen. 8 Okje Harms Gastmann, born 1825 at Campen, is a sister to #5, Eiltje Martens Gastmann. She married Evert Henning in 1857 (he died in 1891) The couple had 5 children living in South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois when Oktje died in 1912 at Ashton IA. She is buried in the Presbyterian cemetery at Forreston IL. 9 Middle name unclear. Surname has an umlauted "u" thus may be Huth or Hueth OR Fluth, Flueth. 10 Aarjen Hinderks Fridag married Geertje Heyen Heikes in Campen in 1820. The records in Campen indicate the following children: Heye Gossen Heykens born 1820, Engel born in 1823(passenger #15), Geertje (passenger #19) born in 1826, Meinje born in 1829, Hinderk (lived from 1833 to 1840), Aryen born 1835, Ebbe born 1838, Hinderk born 1840 and Antje born 1843. Surname is also found as Frudag (with an umlauted "u" so could be Fruedag) 11 Name is inserted between entry 10 and 12. Surname is also found as Frudag (with an umlauted "u" so could be Fruedag) 12-14 Surname is also found as Frudag (with an umlauted "u" so could be Fruedag) 15 Engel Fridag (daughter of passenger # 10) married Rigt Janssen Schafer (Schaefer) in Campen in 1845. The children, Heye Aarjens (1845) and Hauke (1848) were born in Campen. Unclear whether the husband emigrated earlier or died in Germany. Surname is also found as Frudag (with an umlauted "u" so could be Fruedag) 19 Daughter of passenger #10. Surname is also found as Frudag (with an umlauted "u" so could be Fruedag) 20-21 Okke Arends Boomgaarden and Elisabeth Jakobs Meester (Mester)(passenger #21) were married in Campen in 1852. Okke was born in 1827 and Elisabeth in 1829. 23 Gender should be male. 27-28 Brothers, sons and siblings of passengers #53-56. 29-30 Jan (Adden) Meyer born 1826 in Eilsum and Margarethe Willms Kuchje (born in Petkum in 1824)were married in Woquard in 1854. Margaretha W. Kuchje is the step-daughter of Ju(e)rgen Heyen Riemann, passenger #37. 31 Note in right hand column states that this passenger died enroute. 32 Hilda Bruns believes this passenger is the wife of passenger #10, Arjen Fruidag. 33 First name unclear. G. Schnu(e)cker in his book "Die Ostfriesen in Amerika" 1917, says that there was a Tjark Raa and wife on board the Gertrude. 37 First name must be Jurgen. Bruns: Ju(e)rgen Heyen Riemann was born 1807 at Woquard and married in 1835 at Woquard to Gepke Bohlen Buisker (who died in 1853 and was the mother of passenger #30). Children born to this marriage were also Heye Riemann in 1836 and Jacob Riemann in 1839, both in Woquard. 44 Geeske Feiken Royer, born 1826 at Pilsum, died 1894 at Ackley IA; married in the U.S. to Jacobus Swart, who was born in Woquard. 45 The entry indicates that this passenger is C W Pabst's widow. Schnu(e)cker says they came from Emden. 48-52 Jan Martens Sternberg was born in 1819 in Upleward, married in Rysum in 1848 to Hinderika Harms Schulz (born 1823 in Rysum). The children, Tryntje 1849, Harm Friederichs 1851, and Rewertje 1854, were all born in Upleward. The name is listed in other sources sometimes as Stomberg 53-56 Andreas Eilerts de Vries, born at Groothusen, married in 1830 in Canum to Etje Lubben Planter, born in 1805 in Canum. All of the children were born in Canum: Eilert (passenger #27) in 1831, Lu(e)bbo Dirks (passenger #28) in 1834, Anna in 1838 and Etje in 1841. 61-63 Surname has an o Umlaut, thus may be Roepke. 67-71 Hinderk Feiken Akkermann was born in Upleward in 1809. He married in 1835, Catharina Hinderks Adden(gast), born 1812 at Hoesingwehr/Eilsum. The children were all born at Upleward. The family was from Uttum according to Schnu(e)cker. 79 Surname seems to have an u Umlaut, thus may be Loethe. Correspondence 11/10/2004 passengers #80 & 81 Collmann & Janssen Jette Collmann 31 (USA) and Jette G. Janssen 21 (USA) are probably my relatives. If this is the correct couple they settled in Stephenson County, IL . I show Jelle (Jette Ontjes) Collmann being born in Bollinghausen (Gravestone and OSB Nuttermore) 12/29/1823. Jette G. Janssen was born on 1/24/1834 and was the daughter of G.W.A Janssen and Gefine Rose according to her obituary. Jelle O. Collmann died in 3/26/1857. I believe that Jette was pregnant with their child Ontjes Jelle Collmann (born 5/21/1857 in Silver Creek, Stephenson Co., IL) when her husband died. Jette married (4/15/1858) Jelle's brother Albertus Ontjes Collmann. Both these brothers were children of Ontjes Jannsen Collman and Elina Willems Kramer who also came to America and settled in Stephenson County, IL. The OSB Nuttermore page 84 #451 gives more information about their family. Several of the Collmann brothers founded banks and insurance companies. It is possible that Jelle and Albertus Collmann first came to America in 1849, about the same time as their brother Claas. Census data would indicate this is the correct couple. The 1910 Census, when Jette Janssen Collmann is living with her daughter Rose (Reiger in Lincoln NE), she says she got her citizenship in 1856. She was 75 years old at the time of the census. It also said that she had 8 children and 6 were living. The 1920 Census (Lincoln NE) says she came in 1856 and was naturalized in 1861 (hard to read). Jette died in Lincoln NE on 2/7/1923 and was buried in Stephenson County, IL. Chris Correspondence 11/22/2004 passengers #76-78 van Bohning/v. Boning, #42 Ludowig Descendants of Gue Pauels van Böhning Gue Pauels van Böhning was born circa 1804 at Eilsum, Ostfriesland. On 27 Apr 1833, Gue Pauels van Böhning first married Saarke Andresen, daughter of Andreas Jurjens and Lukke Berends, at Uphusen. Saarke Andresen died on 21 Nov 1838 at Uphusen. On 25 Apr 1841, Gue Pauels van Böhning married (second) Mina Reemts at Uphusen. It is thought that Gue Pauels van Böhning's spouse, Mina Reemts died at sea, aboard the "Gertrude", however, the transcription of the passenger manifest, recorded at the departure point (Emden), did not list Mina as a passenger nor did the ship's captain note that she had died at sea. Gue Pauels van Böhning appeared on the 1865 Illinois State Census of Ridott Township, Stephenson County, Illinois, in the household of his son, Paul Bohning and Sophia (nee Berg/van Bergen) Bohning. "Joe" Bohning appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Monroe Township, Butler County, Iowa, in the household of his son, Paul Bohning and Sophia (nee Berg/van Bergen) Bohning Gue Pauels van Böhning died in 1891 at Lennox, Lincoln County, South Dakota. He was buried in the Presbyterian cemetery, between Lennox and Avis, located in South Dakota. Children of Gue Pauels van Böhning and Saarke Andresen were as follows: Andreas Guen van Bohning, born 16 Mar 1834 at Uphusen, Ostfriesland; married Geelke Siebens Berg. Pauel Geuen van Böhning was born on 4 Nov 1836 at Uphusen died 11 Dec 1836 at Uphusen. Paul Bohning, born 7 Apr 1838 at Uphusen, Ostfriesland; married Sievertje Dirkssen van Bergen. Children of Gue Pauels van Böhning and Mina Reemts were: Eeke Geuen van Böhning born on 23 Nov 1842 at Uphusen. (note: the manifest indicates that E. v. Boning was male. This appears to be a mistake as Eeke was female.) ------ Remmer Willem Ludewig was born on 10 Apr 1834 at Manslagt, Ostfriesland. On 13 Jun 1860, Remmer Willem Ludewig, age 26, first married Hilke Poppen, age 21 at Silver Creek Reformed Church, Stephenson County, Illinois. She died 5 Aug 1881 On Feb 1885, Remmer Willem Ludewig, age 50, married (second) Gepke Wiards Aukes, age 47, daughter of Wiard Berends Riekena and Friederike Hanschen Rieken. On the 3rd or 4th of Sep 1908, Remmer Willem Ludewig died at the age of 74. Remmer Willem Ludewig was buried in the German Valley cemetery, located in Stephenson County, Illinois (Author's note: Information from OSB Ridott/SC states location of burial in Silver Creek Reformed Church cemetery.). Children of Remmer Willem1 Ludewig and Hilke Poppen were as follows: Martha Ludewig was born on 25 Mar 1861at Stephenson County, Illinois. Christian Ludewig was born on 6 Dec 1863. Jelderk (Yellerk) Ludwig was born on 6 Jun 1866. Engleina Ludewig was born on 26 Dec 1870. There were no children of Remmer Willem1 Ludewig and Gepke Wiards Riekena.
